[00:00]

Because I think giving gifts is actually a kind of joy for me.

[00:05]

If a foreigner wants to make friends with Chinese, what do you advice?

[00:08]

As for advice

[00:09]

I really disliked that behavior.

[00:13]

So this video I'm interviewing Chinese girls if they want to be friends with foreigners

[00:17]

and what Chinese girls looking for in the friendships

[00:19]

Moreover how Chinese people usually make friends

[00:21]

so if you haven't subscribed to my channel

[00:23]

My name is Aiden

[00:24]

I interview Chinese people and also foreigners living in China

[00:27]

now let's get started

[00:27]

May I ask how old you are?

[00:29]

I'm 25 years old this year.

[00:32]

I'm 19.

[00:33]

I'm 22.

[00:35]

Seventeen.

[00:36]

I'm 24 years old.

[00:38]

My name is Nancy and I live in Chengdu.

[00:40]

High school student?

[00:41]

Yes

[00:42]

Do you speak English?

[00:43]

A little bit.

[00:44]

Can you introduce yourself in English?

[00:46]

hello everyone

[00:47]

my name is Mukhlisa i'm from Xinjiang

[00:51]

and I'm seventeen years old

[00:54]

hi guys

[00:55]

my name is Maye

[00:56]

I'm seventeen years old from Xinjiang

[01:00]

Are you interested in making friends with foreigners?

[01:02]

Yes. But my English isn't very good.

[01:05]

Of course,

[01:06]

Yes.

[01:07]

Sure. I think diversity is great.

[01:11]

I think making friends with foreigners can help me practice my spoken English.

[01:15]

And it's also a form of cultural exchange. That's interesting.

[01:20]

Definitely open to making foreign friends.

[01:22]

But I think I'm a bit conservative when it comes to this.

[01:27]

I believe friendships should focus on quality rather than quantity.

[01:30]

Have you had foreign friends before?

[01:32]

No.

[01:33]

Did you meet any foreign friends at university?

[01:35]

No.

[01:36]

Not at all.

[01:38]

No.

[01:39]

Yes.

[01:41]

I met some foreigners when I was in college at English corners.

[01:45]

But we don't keep in touch anymore because my English is bad.

[01:48]

I had some before, but not anymore.

[01:49]

Sometimes you just meet people by chance

[01:53]

and I think that's fate. And I happened to meet some people.

[01:56]

I have a lot of foreign friends.

[01:57]

I feel like I have more foreign friends than Chinese friends.

[02:01]

Where are they from?

[02:03]

Some are from the United States, Brazil, Italy, Spain

[02:09]

Singapore and France. There are quite a lot of them.

[02:14]

I used to do street interviews.

[02:16]

When I lived in Shanghai.

[02:18]

Actually, I used to be very introverted.

[02:21]

I've always loved English.

[02:23]

When I was in middle and high school, my parents sent me to those classes like Crazy English you know

[02:29]

communicate with foreign teachers

[02:31]

Later in the university in Shanghai,

[02:33]

I really wanted to challenge myself.

[02:35]

So one day I asked a friend if we should try doing street interviews together.

[02:39]

We wanted to do them in English.

[02:41]

We would hang out a lot. And I made many friends.

[02:44]

If you want to make foreign friends, what kind of personality do Chinese find easy to accept?

[02:50]

Being humorous and warm-hearted would be nice.

[02:53]

A warm and proactive personality.

[02:55]

People who like Chinese culture and are outgoing.

[03:00]

I like people who are cheerful and open-minded, who enjoy having fun

[03:07]

And same things everyone values: good manners and good character

[03:15]

I've met some people with bad character before.

[03:18]

Someone funny and outgoing would be good.

[03:22]

Can you give an example? What kind of personality?

[03:24]

Like Tyler the Creator.

[03:26]

The rapper.

[03:28]

Like him?

[03:29]

What qualities do you usually value in a friend?

[03:33]

values, core values, worldview values and outlook on life

[03:35]

Sincerity.

[03:36]

I think it's important for people to empathize with each other.

[03:40]

I'm not a very social person

[03:44]

Quality matters more than quantity when it comes to making friends.

[03:48]

Friends should treat each other sincerely and put themselves in each other's shoes.

[03:55]

Are there things foreigners should avoid doing when making friends with Chinese?

[03:57]

Anything offensive to Chinese

[03:59]

I once had a German friend who was very self-centered.

[04:04]

I brought her from Shanghai to Chengdu to visit and we stayed at my sister's home.

[04:10]

Not all Germans are like that. But she was very judgmental.

[04:13]

As soon as she arrived at my home she started judging my sister.

[04:16]

She even criticized my family right in front of me.

[04:20]

yes

[04:20]

I really disliked that behavior.

[04:24]

I don't like people judging their friends or people around them.

[04:31]

Making jokes that go too far.

[04:34]

I don't really like people who are too shy.

[04:37]

For example, when we go out to play games, they're afraid to try everything.

[04:42]

Or when we play Truth or Dare

[04:46]

and it's their turn but they refuse to do the challenge because they're shy.

[04:52]

Is there a big difference between making friends with foreigners and Chinese people?

[04:55]

Yes, there is.

[04:56]

I think there are both goods and bads.

[04:58]

One good thing is that many foreign friends I've met have very nice personalities.

[05:04]

They make me feel confident.

[05:06]

They don't pay much attention to the negative sides.

[05:09]

They only see the good points in you.

[05:12]

Sometimes, some of my good Chinese friends

[05:15]

They give me advice in a nice way, pointing out my flaws.

[05:20]

Something like that.

[05:21]

But when I talk about these things with foreign friends, they say “Why judge someone?”

[05:25]

They believe we shouldn't judge others.

[05:27]

They think everyone should live their own life.

[05:29]

As for the negative side

[05:31]

Please don't criticize me.

[05:33]

It's not all like that

[05:35]

Sometimes foreigners tend to focus more on themselves.

[05:39]

They care more about their own feelings.

[05:42]

Sometimes they might unintentionally ignore other people's feelings.

[05:47]

What do you usually do when you hang out?

[05:51]

Drinking.

[05:54]

Sometimes we play video games.

[05:56]

Mostly these two.

[05:58]

Or taking photos.

[05:59]

Do you go out for sports like hiking?

[06:01]

Never. That's completely impossible.

[06:04]

Girls might watch movies, go shopping, or go out singing karaoke.

[06:09]

Guys might go out drinking.

[06:13]

Basically just typical things young people do.

[06:16]

As a Chinese, what are your usual ways of making friends?

[06:20]

Sincerity is still the key.

[06:21]

Mostly at school, and maybe online.

[06:24]

Introducing friends to each other

[06:25]

What do you mean?

[06:27]

Introducing friends to each other on WeChat.

[06:28]

It depends on the personality.

[06:33]

There're different ways. But for me, if I really want to be friends with someone, I just tell them.

[06:39]

People are attracted to each other naturally.

[06:41]

My energy attracts the friends who are meant for me.

[06:47]

Since you have a more introverted personality, how do you usually make friends?

[06:50]

How do you get to know new people?

[06:53]

Usually other people approach me first.

[06:56]

I think making friends just takes a sentence or two.

[07:00]

You could just say, “You're so pretty. Can I add you on WeChat? Maybe we can hang out later.”

[07:06]

I made many friends like that.

[07:08]

Is exchanging gifts important when you meet up with friends?

[07:14]

I think it's a way.

[07:17]

How long do you think friends should know each other before it's appropriate to exchange gifts?

[07:22]

When I feel someone is sincere toward me, I might give them a gift.

[07:28]

So you'll offer gifts first, but you also hope they'll return the gifts?

[07:33]

Not returning. Just let me feel that you treat me sincerely as well.

[07:39]

Because I think giving gifts is actually a kind of joy for me.

[07:44]

When you're happy receiving it, I'm happy as well.

[07:49]

If a foreigner wants to make friends with Chinese, what do you advice?

[07:52]

As for advice

[07:55]

Learning some Chinese culture would be nice.

[07:58]

Just start a conversation and break the ice.

[08:04]

First, you can try using social media to find friends.

[08:07]

But you have to tell them where you're traveling to very sincerely.

[08:11]

Or explain what kind of help or connection you're looking for.

[08:15]

Second, try to learn a little Chinese.

[08:17]

You can also look for people in your city who want to learn English.

[08:21]

Maybe learn some local customs.

[08:25]

For example, in Thailand, you shouldn't touch children's head.

[08:30]

I think it's good to learn about it before coming to China.

[08:35]

It's the same when Chinese go abroad.

[08:38]

What do you think is the biggest difficulty in making foreign friends?

[08:43]

The language.

[08:44]

If a foreigner doesn't speak Chinese and the Chinese person doesn't speak English,

[08:48]

Can they still become friends?

[08:50]

I don't think so.

[08:52]

Language is a very important factor in friendship.

[08:56]

Very important.

[08:58]

Just a little bit is ok.

[09:00]

Because Chinese are very outgoing.

[09:02]

If you just say something "thank you" in Chinese, people will think your Chinese is really good.

[09:08]

That way, you break the first barrier between yourself and others.

[09:13]

Thank you guys for watching

[09:14]

I also make another version of interviewing Chinese guys about making foreign friends

[09:18]

and if you do watch both of the videos

[09:19]

For future leave in the comments of how people make friends in your country

[09:23]

hope you guys enjoyed the video I will see you guys in the next episode
