good morning good afternoon and good

[00:01]

evening welcome to smashing english

[00:04]

before we start this video be sure to

[00:06]

subscribe because we make new videos all

[00:08]

the time and i don't want you to miss

[00:10]

any so with that said let's get on with

[00:12]

the video

[00:18]

happy valentine's day a day that can go

[00:21]

one of two ways it's either a day of

[00:24]

romance chocolates love or it's a day of

[00:28]

crying stalking your ex-partners on

[00:30]

social media and waiting for the whole

[00:32]

day to end whatever your situation is i

[00:34]

wish you a very lovely valentine's day

[00:37]

now because it's a day of love i thought

[00:39]

we could look at one of my favorite

[00:41]

romantic comedies love actually written

[00:44]

by richard curtis this film is one of my

[00:48]

favorite films of all time it's mainly a

[00:50]

christmas film but obviously it's also

[00:53]

very centered around love now i know

[00:55]

what you're thinking laura why is

[00:57]

looking at love actually going to help

[00:58]

me learn english let me tell you i think

[01:01]

that this film does a really good job of

[01:03]

showing british people mainly british

[01:06]

people there is one american person in

[01:08]

it but mainly british people talking in

[01:11]

quite a normal way sometimes with

[01:14]

british media like

[01:16]

downton abbey or peaky blinders you know

[01:19]

period pieces they don't really show

[01:22]

british people talking how we really

[01:24]

talk whereas in love actually there are

[01:27]

so many british slang words and phrases

[01:31]

that we really use every day so i am

[01:34]

going to teach you some british slang

[01:36]

words and phrases that can be found in

[01:38]

the film love actually just a little

[01:40]

warning there might be a few teeny

[01:43]

little swear words in this because in

[01:45]

britain we do use teeny little swear

[01:48]

words quite a lot and also quite big

[01:50]

swear words quite a lot but today

[01:52]

they'll only be little teeny ones in so

[01:55]

if you've got any little teeny people

[01:56]

watching maybe say bye-bye if you don't

[01:59]

want them hearing teeny tiny swear words

[02:01]

okay that's my disclaimer done okay

[02:03]

first off we have pop it's a great word

[02:07]

pop and in one particular scene in this

[02:09]

film we hear it used twice so we have

[02:11]

the character jamie he comes home to

[02:13]

find his brother chris in his house and

[02:15]

he says what are you doing here and

[02:17]

chris says oh i just popped over to

[02:19]

borrow some old cds and then a couple of

[02:21]

lines later jamie says i thought i'd pop

[02:24]

back before the reception so what they

[02:26]

mean by pop is just to go somewhere

[02:29]

quickly so popping back somewhere is to

[02:32]

go back somewhere but do it quickly i'm

[02:34]

not going to stay there for a long time

[02:35]

just popping back i'll be in there for

[02:37]

about five minutes or you might hear

[02:39]

someone say um can you pop to the shops

[02:41]

and get me some bread just pop to the

[02:42]

shops just go to the shops quickly don't

[02:44]

spend a long time there just a five

[02:46]

minute job so in britain if you hear the

[02:48]

word pop used in a situation like this

[02:50]

it means to go somewhere quickly next up

[02:53]

we have a word that appears multiple

[02:54]

times in this film but in different

[02:56]

situations and in different contexts and

[02:59]

the word is bugger what a great word

[03:02]

bugger oh bugger so the first time we

[03:04]

hear it is when the prime minister

[03:06]

realizes that there is a gorgeous woman

[03:08]

called natalie working for him and he's

[03:11]

just started being the prime minister

[03:12]

and he's thinking oh no

[03:14]

why is there a woman that i'm probably

[03:16]

going to fall in love with working for

[03:18]

me that's going to distract me it's

[03:20]

going to be horrific and he says

[03:22]

bugger that is genuinely bad timing so

[03:24]

when you hear bugger used like this it's

[03:26]

an exclamation it's a sign of

[03:29]

frustration it's something you say if

[03:31]

something's gone wrong if you're annoyed

[03:34]

but then later on in the film we also

[03:35]

hear bugger used like this bugger off

[03:38]

bother off and that just means go away

[03:41]

get out of here it's like a

[03:44]

playful

[03:45]

friendly

[03:46]

banter way of saying go away you

[03:49]

wouldn't say it to your boss you

[03:50]

probably wouldn't say it to your

[03:52]

grandmother but you might say it to a

[03:54]

friend if you were just teasing them

[03:55]

bugger could be considered as like a

[03:58]

tiny swear word i don't think many

[04:00]

people in britain would be offended if

[04:02]

you said the word bugger it's not like

[04:04]

the f word or anything it's like a

[04:06]

tiniest white word a little one i'd say

[04:08]

bugger off isn't used so much anymore i

[04:11]

think now bugger off has been replaced

[04:14]

by piss off

[04:16]

now piss off i think would be considered

[04:18]

as maybe a next level up swear word it

[04:20]

probably it's a bit more aggressive i'd

[04:23]

say you know if i told someone to piss

[04:24]

off that's normally not a playful thing

[04:27]

it's normally an angry thing you know i

[04:30]

hate you go away piss off you know if i

[04:32]

say that to you means i don't like you

[04:34]

so say bugger off is a bit more friendly

[04:37]

piss off is a bit more

[04:39]

get out the next word we have is dodgy

[04:41]

and we hear the word dodgy when colin is

[04:44]

talking about some weird looking food he

[04:46]

says yeah a bit dodgy isn't it dodgy

[04:49]

just means weird suspicious something

[04:52]

that you can't trust you know if your

[04:54]

food looks dodgy maybe it looks like

[04:57]

it's rotten or looks like it might give

[05:00]

you food poisoning or it just looks a

[05:01]

bit um

[05:03]

a bit weird i'm not i'm not confident in

[05:05]

that natalie talks about where she lives

[05:08]

she says i'm from wandsworth the dodgy

[05:11]

end so the dodgy end of wandsworth the

[05:13]

dodgy end of a place is the the bad end

[05:17]

the end where you know if you live there

[05:19]

you might

[05:21]

get robbed you might um

[05:24]

run into some criminals so dodgy

[05:27]

basically is suspicious not very good a

[05:29]

bit untrustworthy you can't trust it

[05:31]

then the character colin is talking

[05:34]

about why british girls don't like him

[05:37]

he's saying you know this is the reason

[05:39]

i don't have a girlfriend it's because

[05:40]

british girls

[05:42]

they they don't understand me he says

[05:44]

that the girls who would be most suited

[05:46]

to him are the girls who are game for a

[05:48]

laugh now i think it's much more common

[05:51]

nowadays to say up for a laugh but it

[05:53]

means the same thing so if you are up

[05:55]

for a laugh you are someone who enjoys a

[05:58]

joke you're someone who enjoys a laugh

[06:00]

you are someone who doesn't take

[06:02]

yourself very seriously you're fun to be

[06:04]

around you're up for a laugh the next

[06:06]

word i want to tell you about is sack to

[06:09]

sack to sack someone the prime minister

[06:12]

talks about wanting to sack someone if

[06:15]

you want to sack someone you want to

[06:17]

fire them so we might say george sacked

[06:20]

lisa earlier on which just means george

[06:23]

fired lisa or we might say lisa got the

[06:26]

sack so sack can also be a noun the sack

[06:30]

lisa got the sack lose your job bye the

[06:33]

next thing i want to draw your attention

[06:34]

to is a phrase so natalie is talking to

[06:37]

the prime minister and she is talking

[06:39]

about her old boyfriend she's saying she

[06:42]

used to have a boyfriend who wasn't very

[06:44]

nice and the prime minister says oh i'm

[06:46]

sorry about that and then natalie says

[06:48]

i'm well shot of him i'm well shot of

[06:51]

him to be shot to be shot of something

[06:54]

means that you are far away from

[06:56]

something you've taken yourself away

[06:58]

from someone or something but it usually

[07:00]

means that you are much better without

[07:03]

that thing or that person it's better

[07:05]

that i'm away from them i'm well shot of

[07:07]

him so i'm

[07:08]

far away from him i'm distanced from him

[07:11]

but also it's a good thing so it's fine

[07:13]

then of course it wouldn't be a british

[07:16]

film if some people did not talk about

[07:19]

the traffic we love talking about the

[07:21]

traffic in britain it's all we talk

[07:22]

about traffic and weather that's it the

[07:24]

character john starts talking about the

[07:26]

traffic and he calls it murder he says

[07:29]

junction 13 that's just murder so

[07:32]

obviously murder means very very bad bad

[07:35]

traffic next up we have sodding

[07:39]

what a great word the prime minister

[07:40]

says at one point so much sodding money

[07:43]

ask him why he's spending so much

[07:45]

sodding money sodding is just a word

[07:48]

that you might hear to emphasize

[07:50]

something it's like so much bloody money

[07:53]

it's just another teeny tiny swear word

[07:55]

that you might put in front of something

[07:56]

if you want to emphasize it next up we

[07:59]

have a scene between daniel and sam and

[08:01]

sam is a little boy and he's very very

[08:04]

in love with this little girl and it's

[08:06]

very sweet and he's talking about the

[08:08]

fact that this girl is the only girl for

[08:11]

him there's only one person for him and

[08:13]

she is it and then daniel says fair

[08:16]

point and if you hear fair point it just

[08:18]

means yeah okay i understand that's a

[08:20]

good point you you make sense there

[08:23]

that's a good point but some people

[08:24]

nowadays just say fair

[08:27]

instead of fair point they might just

[08:28]

say yeah fair next up we have the scene

[08:31]

that is probably my favorite scene in

[08:32]

the whole movie the prime minister

[08:34]

realizes he's in love with natalie so he

[08:37]

goes

[08:38]

down the street that he knows she lives

[08:40]

on and he knocks on every door to try

[08:43]

and find natalie and the woman who opens

[08:45]

one of the doors that he knocks on says

[08:48]

you're not who i think you are are you

[08:49]

and he says yes fred so afraid so is

[08:52]

just a phrase that i think sums up

[08:55]

british people because we're always

[08:57]

afraid we're always afraid of offending

[09:00]

people i think so we would use afraid so

[09:03]

if you are giving some negative news

[09:06]

some bad news something that maybe the

[09:08]

person might not want to hear so

[09:10]

obviously in this context he's using it

[09:12]

as a joke so the person's saying are you

[09:14]

the prime minister and he says yes i'm

[09:15]

afraid so like sorry about that you know

[09:17]

a bit of

[09:18]

self-referential humor now we come to

[09:21]

our final phrase so towards the end of

[09:23]

the movie everyone is at the airport and

[09:26]

we hear one character saying to the

[09:28]

other what are you doing here he doesn't

[09:29]

say what are you doing here he says what

[09:32]

are you doing here this is quite common

[09:34]

in a lot of people from london they

[09:36]

might just take out words like r so like

[09:39]

what are you doing here or instead of

[09:41]

what are you saying they might say what

[09:43]

you're saying again quite common with

[09:45]

some people not for everyone but

[09:47]

sometimes you might hear that are

[09:50]

dropped and that's about it i hope you

[09:52]

learned some new words and phrases from

[09:54]

this film script i highly recommend the

[09:56]

film if you want to watch the film it's

[09:57]

a bit rude so check the um

[10:00]

classification don't watch it with your

[10:02]

five-year-old children maybe just a

[10:04]

warning but it's a lovely lovely film i
