a game saving play there's nothing else

[00:02]

like it in basketball block by game a

[00:05]

block throws it up for eight shot

[00:08]

blocked

[00:09]

BYO a steal quick does to land stolen by

[00:13]

bur and a cut to DJ

[00:15]

yeah the a game saving shot is this the

[00:23]

dagger but have you ever seen a life

[00:26]

saving play this is McCall Riley senior

[00:29]

forward for the University of Alabama in

[00:31]

the late 2000s and he's playing in the

[00:33]

SEC tournament it's the biggest game of

[00:35]

his life up to this point game on the

[00:37]

line down three with 2 seconds left on

[00:40]

the clock and he's about to hit a shot

[00:42]

that not only nearly saved this game for

[00:45]

his team but quite possibly saved the

[00:47]

lives of thousands of people Riley for

three we're hearing some rumbling behind

Sportsbook it's March 14th 2008 it's day

[02:20]

two of the SEC basketball tournament and

[02:22]

Mississippi state is up on Alabama by 3

[02:24]

points 59 to 56 there's 2 seconds left

[02:28]

on the clock Alabama's got to make

[02:29]

something happened with their season

[02:31]

three points away from being over

[02:33]

Alabama draws up a play for this guy

[02:36]

right here our friend Mcall Riley now

[02:38]

MLL was a great player second leading

[02:40]

scorer on this Alabama Squad but on this

[02:43]

particular night he was hot and cold the

[02:44]

entire game he got off to a slow start

[02:46]

but piled up 13 points in the final 12

[02:49]

minutes of the first half followed up by

[02:51]

a handful of misses and zero points in

[02:53]

the entire second half at least up to

[02:56]

this point this was Mall's last chance

[02:58]

at this he was a senior his team was on

[03:01]

the brink of elimination his number was

[03:03]

being called and he answered Riley for

[03:08]

three the was

[03:11]

coming with their season on the line

[03:13]

Mcall Riley rattles in a threo buzzer

[03:16]

beater to send the game into overtime

[03:19]

the fans explode Mississippi state is

[03:21]

stunned this game's going into overtime

[03:24]

but right as overtime tipped off fans at

[03:26]

home noticed that their TVs were

[03:28]

becoming d distorted the broadcast

[03:30]

signal of the game degrading and getting

[03:33]

worse in that moment they had no idea

[03:36]

what was going on but while something

[03:38]

special was unfolding on the court

[03:40]

Devastation was about to unfold just

[03:42]

outside of it as overtime gets underway

[03:44]

there's an emergency report that a

[03:46]

massive storm was building up just west

[03:48]

of the Georgia Dome where the game was

[03:49]

being played within a few minutes the

[03:51]

storm had developed into an ef2 tornado

[03:55]

with Winds of up to 130 mph at first

[03:58]

fans and players with in the arena were

[04:00]

unaware of what was going on outside but

[04:02]

very quickly the situation became

[04:04]

apparent to

[04:05]

everyone State basket G is fouled by

[04:08]

Stewart that's a

[04:15]

block and uh we're hearing some rumbling

[04:19]

behind

[04:20]

us there's some concern the building is

[04:24]

uh rocking a bit the storm becoming so

[04:28]

strong that it shook the Arena and

[04:30]

ripped through panels on the roof fans

[04:32]

in attendance that night said it sounded

[04:34]

like a freight train was ripping through

[04:36]

the roof of the Arena Ben hansboro

[04:38]

Mississippi State guard and brother of

[04:40]

former tarhill and NBA player Tyler

[04:42]

hansboro said he thought he was hearing

[04:44]

a tornado or a terrorist attack which is

[04:48]

quite an odd combination of guesses but

[04:50]

the man didn't know what was going on

[04:51]

cut him some slack officials had to stop

[04:54]

the game as the tornado ripped past the

[04:56]

arena in the surrounding downtown area

[04:58]

fans quickly began to head for the doors

[05:00]

but the arena staff told them they

[05:01]

needed to stay inside because outside it

[05:04]

was far too dangerous to even try to get

[05:06]

out of the building and within a few

[05:08]

minutes the tornado had passed through

[05:10]

causing more damage than the staff and

[05:12]

Engineers on site had initially thought

[05:15]

it wasn't until later that Weather

[05:16]

Services were able to track the path of

[05:18]

the tornado and its destruction where

[05:20]

they came to the Bleak realization that

[05:23]

this tornado came within just 100 yards

[05:26]

of the Arena wiping out everything in

[05:28]

its path downtown and causing a half a

[05:31]

billion dollars in damage the worst

[05:33]

realization came a couple days after

[05:36]

when a body was found amongst the debris

[05:38]

of the tornado proving that this was a

[05:41]

fatal event but it could have been far

[05:44]

more catastrophic if McCall Riley did

[05:46]

not hit his game tying shot to send the

[05:48]

game into overtime nearly 20,000 fans

[05:51]

would have exited the arena directly

[05:54]

into the path and at the exact moment

[05:56]

the tornado hit thousands of people

[05:59]

would have been in danger the downtown

[06:00]

area that was wrecked by the tornado

[06:02]

would have been filled with people what

[06:04]

could have unfolded in the following

[06:06]

moments would have been devastating but

[06:08]

thanks to a buzzer beater these fans

[06:10]

stayed in their seats safe and Away From

[06:12]

The Storm the game went into overtime

[06:14]

and the streets were essentially empty

[06:17]

an unbelievable sequence of events that

[06:20]

undoubtedly saved the lives of countless

[06:22]

fans and attendants that night about an

[06:24]

hour after the tornado had passed the

[06:26]

game resumed and finding themselves in

[06:28]

an eerily similar situation as they were

[06:30]

at the end of regulation Alabama went

[06:33]

back to Mcall for one last shot this

[06:35]

time to win it all and this time he

[06:39]

missed it the kid was devastated so

[06:42]

close to Leading his team to a playoff

[06:44]

win and coming up short mcll may not

[06:47]

have hit the game-winning shot he was

[06:49]

hoping for but what he did do was

[06:51]

something far greater because he hit

[06:54]

possibly the first and only life-saving

[06:57]

shot and that ladies and gentlemen is

[07:00]

the butterfly effect when one seemingly

[07:03]

insignificant occurrence has Rippling

[07:05]

effects leading to some consequential

[07:07]

event sometimes long after the initial

[07:09]

event and this is just one of many

[07:11]

Butterfly Effects within the world of

[07:13]

basketball that you have to see to

[07:16]

[Music]

[07:22]

believe nearly 5,000 mies away from the

[07:25]

US Serbia has grown to become a hot spot

[07:28]

for basketball Talent despite their love

[07:30]

for soccer and relatively small

[07:32]

population their influence over the

[07:33]

basketball world has been a remarkable

[07:35]

feat over the last few decades and among

[07:37]

the countless young Serbian hopefuls

[07:39]

looking to make a name for themselves in

[07:41]

hoops it would eventually be Darko milic

[07:44]

a player who didn't leave much of an

[07:45]

impact on the court who would

[07:47]

inadvertently alter the story of

[07:49]

basketball forever not by himself but

[07:52]

through a young kid who had no plans of

[07:54]

even playing the sport back in 2006

[07:57]

Darko milic was beginning his fourth

[07:59]

season in the NBA and by this point he

[08:01]

had already been labeled as a huge draft

[08:04]

bust he had fallen out of the rotation

[08:06]

in Detroit the hype of him being a

[08:08]

generational Prospect had long wore off

[08:11]

and well it didn't help that the

[08:13]

multiple future Hall of Famers chosen

[08:14]

after him in the draft were blossoming

[08:16]

well ahead of schedule on the court he

[08:19]

wasn't really able to offer the Pistons

[08:21]

much at the time but off the court Darko

[08:23]

had the opportunity to offer a fellow

[08:25]

Serbian everything that same year Jay

[08:28]

Smith assistant coach of the University

[08:29]

of Detroit Mercy was looking for players

[08:31]

to fill his roster one of the players he

[08:33]

had his sights on was a 6'6 forward out

[08:36]

of Serbia named Nea Smith offered the

[08:39]

kid a scholarship but moving across the

[08:41]

world to play basketball in the US was a

[08:43]

massive leap for the young Prospect he

[08:45]

could take the scholarship and make the

[08:46]

move or he could stay in Europe and take

[08:48]

a shot at a career in professional

[08:50]

basketball uncertain about what decision

[08:52]

he should make nania got in touch with a

[08:54]

friend and fellow Serbian born player

[08:56]

who had already made a similar

[08:57]

transition from his home country to play

[08:59]

play basketball in the states Darko

[09:01]

milic now milic not only assured nman

[09:04]

that he should take the opportunity he

[09:06]

also took him into his home and gave him

[09:09]

time to acclimate to American life

[09:10]

without being on his own and over the

[09:12]

course of that season their friendship

[09:14]

grew neia would go to Pistons games

[09:16]

throw parties at darko's house and even

[09:18]

had access to the resources Darko had

[09:20]

gained in his time in the NBA Darko had

[09:22]

created an entry point to American

[09:24]

basketball for nman that otherwise

[09:26]

wouldn't have existed unbeknownst to him

[09:29]

nearly a decade later his generosity

[09:32]

would Aid another young Serbian Prospect

[09:34]

with his journey to the US after

[09:36]

finishing his college career Nea played

[09:38]

one season in the Premier basketball

[09:40]

league in the US before moving back home

[09:42]

to play professionally in Serbia where

[09:43]

he played his last season in 2012 a

[09:46]

relatively unremarkable career to most

[09:48]

fans but one that sparked inspiration in

[09:51]

his younger brother Nia growing up

[09:54]

Nicole yic was always interested in

[09:56]

basketball but it was never really his

[09:57]

calling as we all know now horses and

[10:00]

horse racing are where his true passion

[10:02]

Lies by the time Nola had become a

[10:04]

teenager he was competing at the amateur

[10:06]

level in horse racing pursuing the sport

[10:08]

as more than just a hobby in interviews

[10:10]

Nola has stated that Growing Up Racing

[10:12]

was always a priority over basketball

[10:15]

until he witnessed his brother's Journey

[10:17]

his transition to the US the connections

[10:19]

he made and the level he had reached in

[10:21]

the sports that for the first time

[10:23]

making a career out of basketball

[10:25]

materialized into a possibility for a

[10:27]

young nicoa yic and so at 14 years old

[10:30]

Nola made the decision to forego any

[10:32]

aspirations of becoming a horse racer

[10:34]

and put all of his efforts into

[10:36]

basketball now 15 years three MVPs and

[10:40]

an NBA championship later turns out that

[10:43]

was probably the right decision if it

[10:44]

wasn't for Darko opening his doors for

[10:46]

an old friend from Serbia Nicole's

[10:48]

brother may have opted out of college in

[10:50]

the states he may have stayed home and

[10:52]

pursued other interests as his only real

[10:54]

tangible Avenue Post high school was at

[10:56]

Detroit Mercy he would have never made

[10:58]

the difficult transition to America his

[11:00]

Collegiate and pro career in hoops may

[11:02]

have never happened the inspiration he

[11:04]

gave to his younger brother would have

[11:05]

gone in a completely different direction

[11:07]

and we may have never gotten one of the

[11:10]

greatest basketball players of all time

[11:13]

leading up to the time he was drafted

[11:14]

and even recently Darko has given words

[11:17]

of wisdom encouragement and advice to

[11:19]

Nico yic continuing to be a valuable

[11:22]

friend to the yic family long after he

[11:24]

helped neia nearly two decades ago after

[11:27]

10 years in the NBA dark michic retired

[11:30]

a champion with 10 solid Seasons to his

[11:32]

name he never shook the label as being

[11:34]

the guy that shouldn't have been drafted

[11:36]

second overall and one of the greatest

[11:38]

draft classes ever and although he never

[11:40]

gave fans quite what they were expecting

[11:42]

coming into the league he gave us

[11:43]

something a whole lot better one of the

[11:45]

greatest players to ever touch a

[11:47]

basketball

[12:01]

o Ellie is lucky here now watch what

[12:03]

happens and watch him go at a right

[12:06]

there he goes right back at and you see

[12:07]

Scotty Brooks is happy

[12:10]

and right here look at him go up this is

[12:13]

Mario Ellie former guard for the Houston

[12:15]

Rockets and he's on path to winning his

[12:17]

first NBA championship this is Danny a

[12:21]

and he's not happy about it but this

[12:23]

second round matchup between the Rockets

[12:25]

and the suns in the 1994 playoffs was

[12:27]

heated right from the jump coming off of

[12:29]

finals appearance in the previous season

[12:31]

the suns were being pushed to the brink

[12:33]

by a tough upand cominging Rockets team

[12:35]

the Suns took the first two games of the

[12:37]

series but in game three Houston

[12:39]

completely blitzed them in a 16-point

[12:41]

blowout but in the midst of these games

[12:43]

a smaller battle was taking place

[12:45]

between Mario Ellie and Danny a tensions

[12:48]

were building as the play got more and

[12:50]

more physical neither of them willing to

[12:52]

budge leading to this moment towards the

[12:55]

end of game three an exclamation point

[12:58]

on a blowout win this was Mario's third

[13:00]

bucket of the entire game and yet that

[13:02]

didn't stop him from letting a hear

[13:04]

every single detail about it but with

[13:05]

the Rockets up double digits and time

[13:07]

winding down this game was far too Out

[13:09]

Of Reach for a and the Suns to change

[13:11]

the outcome so instead a few plays later

[13:14]

a does something that would change the

[13:17]

course of NBA

[13:19]

history this game is going to wind down

[13:21]

to a whimper for Phoenix Elijah on

[13:24]

putting the cherry on the Sunday 118 to2

[13:29]

a just tried to Rifle the ball in and he

[13:32]

and Ellie is mad I wonder if he

[13:35]

did well that was a bit of an

[13:38]

overreaction in a moment of frustration

[13:41]

Danny a decides if I can't beat him I'll

[13:43]

just hurt him the man Zips a fast ball

[13:46]

right at Mario hitting him directly in

[13:48]

the face he then proceeds to play it off

[13:51]

like it was an accident an took the low

[13:53]

road and beamed the guy when his guard

[13:55]

was down and this one decision changed

[13:57]

the direction of this entire series if

[13:59]

the win in game three didn't give the

[14:01]

Rockets enough motivation seeing their

[14:03]

teammate get sniped by a notoriously

[14:05]

dirty player was enough to get them

[14:07]

going little did a know this decision

[14:11]

would have much greater ramifications

[14:14]

because watching all of this take place

[14:16]

was this guy Robert ay aka Big Shot Bob

[14:19]

aka the man with more rings than Michael

[14:21]

Jordan and ory was appalled by Ang's

[14:25]

actions so much so that from this day

[14:27]

forward aie despised a and his dirty

[14:30]

tactics years later ory even went as far

[14:33]

as saying he hates Danny a and he wasn't

[14:35]

afraid to let everyone know it

[14:37]

fortunately for him the next season

[14:39]

Danny a retired from the NBA where he

[14:42]

could no longer bother aie or anyone

[14:44]

else until the Phoenix Suns hired him to

[14:47]

be the assistant coach the very next

[14:49]

season in 1996 but the changes within

[14:52]

the Suns organization that year did not

[14:54]

end with the coaching staff they were

[14:56]

also looking to part ways with their

[14:58]

Superstar Charles Barkley so on August

[15:01]

19th 1996 just 3 months after Ang's hire

[15:05]

Phoenix traded away Barkley to the

[15:07]

Houston Rockets for Sam Cassell Chucky

[15:09]

Brown Mark Bryant and Robert ay two

[15:13]

years after that fateful inbounds pass

[15:15]

the guy who aie hated so much was now

[15:19]

his coach and as you might expect this

[15:22]

did not last very long despite their now

[15:24]

professional relationship Orie was not

[15:26]

going to hide his feelings about Ane

[15:28]

practices were heated games were even

[15:30]

worse and just 30 games into his time

[15:33]

with the Suns ory's disdain for AE was

[15:36]

put on full display for the world to

[15:38]

[Music]

[15:41]

see on Sunday night he did this to his

[15:44]

coach Danny a in a moment infamously

[15:47]

known as the towel throw Robert Ory

[15:50]

tosses a sweaty towel in a his coach's

[15:53]

face completely dismissing him in the

[15:56]

process look at the disgust on ory's

[15:59]

face he really did hate that man and in

[16:02]

that moment there was absolutely nothing

[16:04]

a could do about it what punishment

[16:07]

could possibly be enough for such an

[16:09]

action after serving a two- game

[16:11]

suspension for the towel episode Robert

[16:13]

Ory was supposed to be back in the

[16:15]

Phoenix uniform tonight instead he's La

[16:18]

bound 72 hours later Robert Ory was no

[16:20]

longer on the Suns an unbelievable

[16:23]

Coincidence of a transaction considering

[16:25]

a said the trade had nothing to do with

[16:27]

the towel incident the team Orie was

[16:29]

traded to a young Rising team in the Los

[16:32]

Angeles Lakers who signed Shaquille

[16:34]

O'Neal and drafted Kobe Bryant just 6

[16:37]

months prior and it was in LA where aie

[16:40]

would grow his Legend as one of the

[16:41]

biggest clutch shot makers in NBA

[16:44]

history shots that were the deciding

[16:46]

factor in championships and plays that

[16:48]

solidified the legacies of both Shaq and

[16:51]

Kobe during their three Pat if Danny a

[16:54]

doesn't rifle a pass at Mario Ellie

[16:57]

Robert Ory never grows to ha the man

[16:59]

there's no tension between the two of

[17:01]

them or he never throws the towel and he

[17:03]

never gets shipped off to the Lakers

[17:05]

completely altering and very possibly

[17:08]

preventing a three p Championship run

[17:11]

half a decade later all of this because

[17:14]

Mario Ellie got a tough bucket and a had

[17:16]

to crash out in the final moments of a

[17:18]

playoff game that was already decided

[17:20]

years later Robert was asked if he

[17:22]

regretted throwing the towel or if he

[17:24]

would change anything about that

[17:25]

incident a changed man Robert said yeah

[17:29]

of course if he could do it all over

[17:31]
