[00:10]

I don't know why it

[00:13]

started I don't have any definite

[00:15]

answers for that

[00:20]

myself it's a process it doesn't happen

[00:25]

overnight when you depersonalize another

[00:28]

person and view them just as an object

[00:32]

an object for

[00:34]

pleasure not a living breathing human

[00:38]

[Music]

[00:42]

being hunting in itself was a thrill

[00:46]

never knowing who I'd meet how nice

[00:48]

looking they'd

[00:50]

be how much fun we'd

[00:53]

have the killing was a means to an

[00:58]

end

[01:00]

[Music]

[01:02]

I just wanted to have the person under

[01:04]

my complete

[01:05]

control not having to consider their

[01:08]

wishes being able to keep them there as

[01:11]

long as I

[01:13]

[Music]

[01:16]

wanted I don't regret it that's the

[01:20]

funny

[01:22]

[Music]

[01:28]

thing

[01:31]

[Music]

[01:45]

I was at home asleep and got a call from

[01:48]

a source who told me that it looks like

[01:52]

there's a guy who's been saving body

[01:53]

parts in his

[01:55]

apartment it was very odd because it's

[01:58]

Milwaukee those kind of things don't

[01:59]

don't happen

[02:01]

here I'm Annie Schwarz I was a reporter

[02:05]

for the Milwaukee

[02:08]

Journal I was the only journalist on the

[02:12]

scene detectives had not even begun to

[02:15]

arrive

[02:17]

yet it was a quiet scene in a way that

[02:22]

crime scenes normally are

[02:24]

not I think that is what what struck me

[02:27]

the

[02:28]

most

[02:31]

my wife and I we were

[02:33]

asleep and the police knocked on our

[02:36]

door and the first thing I thought was

[02:38]

what did I do why are they

[02:42]

here my name is Vernell bass and I lived

[02:45]

across the hall from Jeffrey

[02:48]

dmer the officers told us that we had to

[02:50]

evacuate the building and I saw that hey

[02:54]

there's a lot of police over in Jeff's

[02:58]

apartment and the first thing I said was

[03:01]

is Jeff okay and one of the offers said

[03:03]

yeah that is

[03:05]

fine and I wondered why did he use that

[03:11]

phrase I could see them taking things

[03:14]

out of Jeff's

[03:19]

apartment and the officer said yeah

[03:23]

11 I said 11 what he said we just we

[03:27]

found 11

[03:28]

skulls

[03:30]

that was horrible it was

[03:33]

horrible to know that someone that I had

[03:37]

liked as an individual to commit all of

[03:40]

these

[03:42]

crimes I was in a State of

[03:51]

Shock I walked up the stairs and I

[03:54]

stepped into the

[03:58]

apartment it looked like a pretty normal

[04:02]

apartment that would be in a lowincome

[04:05]

part of

[04:07]

town it

[04:09]

wasn't terribly clean and

[04:13]

organized it was just looked like a

[04:16]

single guy lived

[04:22]

there it did

[04:26]

smell but it's not unusual that you

[04:29]

might smell urine or you might

[04:32]

smell garbage that somebody hadn't taken

[04:34]

out in a

[04:40]

while I was called about 3:00 in the

[04:44]

morning to come in an interview a guy

[04:47]

that had seven or eight skulls in his

[04:52]

apartment and I thought they were

[04:55]

kidding that it was a

[04:57]

joke my name is Den Murphy I was a

[05:01]

detective on the homicide

[05:04]

unit I was briefed by the lieutenant he

[05:08]

told me the guy had body parts in his

[05:11]

freezer he had a heart he had a

[05:15]

bicep and the body parts were cut in

[05:17]

little squares you know like hamburger

[05:22]

patties in my years working I never had

[05:25]

a case where there was this many victims

[05:29]

and

[05:30]

nobody not knowing anything police in

[05:33]

Wisconsin this morning are investigating

[05:35]

a Grizzly Discovery in a Milwaukee

[05:37]

apartment the discovery of pieces of

[05:39]

bodies police found parts of as many as

[05:41]

15 human bodies inside police are

[05:44]

questioning the 31-year-old man who

[05:46]

lives in the apartment Milwaukee

[05:48]

newspaper reporting the man has

[05:49]

confessed to killing at least 11

[05:53]

people when I walked into the interview

[05:56]

room the first

[05:57]

time dmer appeared

[06:00]

defeated he was all disheveled from

[06:02]

fighting with the

[06:05]

officers he says why don't you just

[06:07]

shoot me for what I did I said I don't

[06:10]

want to shoot you I don't want to hurt

[06:11]

you then he said but what I did you guys

[06:14]

will be

[06:18]

famous the following will be a taped

[06:21]

interview taken from Jeffrey uh Lionel

[06:25]

dmer I spent 66 hours interviewing dmer

[06:31]

and each time we got more into depth as

[06:34]

to what he did how he did

[06:37]

it he remembered everything even his

[06:40]

first

[06:41]

victim he says you always remember your

[06:44]

first

[06:52]

one it started

[06:57]

gradually I had been having

[07:00]

um for a good few

[07:02]

years fantasies of meeting a

[07:05]

good-looking hitchhiker and sexually

[07:08]

enjoying

[07:10]

him I never thought it would really

[07:14]

happen but everything was set up so

[07:18]

perfectly at one time in

[07:22]

Ohio I was interested in finding the

[07:25]

chip andelle type goodlooking swimmer

[07:28]

type build

[07:32]

and that just happened to be the week

[07:34]

when no one was home I had the

[07:38]

car about 5:00 at night and I was

[07:41]

driving back home after

[07:44]

drinking I wasn't looking for anyone but

[07:47]

about a mile away from the house there

[07:50]

he

[07:53]

was hitchhiking along the

[07:58]

road

[07:59]

he was

[08:01]

attractive I was attracted to

[08:03]

him I stopped and thought well should I

[08:08]

pick him up or

[08:09]

not and I asked him if he wanted to go

[08:12]

back and smoke some pot and he said oh

[08:21]

[Music]

[08:28]

yeah

[08:33]

and we went into my bedroom had some

[08:37]

beer and from the time I spent with him

[08:40]

I could tell he wasn't

[08:46]

gay in the township where I was from

[08:49]

homosexuality was the ultimate taboo it

[08:52]

was never discussed never I had desires

[08:56]

to be with someone but never met anyone

[08:59]

one that was gay that I knew of so that

[09:02]

was sexually

[09:07]

frustrating I uh didn't know how else to

[09:11]

keep him there other than to get the

[09:16]

barbell and um to hit him over the

[09:25]

head then strangled him with the same

[09:28]

barbell

[09:36]

we discovered that dmer had just

[09:38]

graduated from high

[09:40]

school he was

[09:42]

18 when he killed

[09:48]

Hicks I was out of my mind with fear

[09:51]

that night I didn't know what to do I

[09:54]

had gone to such an

[09:58]

extreme

[09:59]

pce the house for a

[10:02]

while I end up uh I did

[10:10]

mastbate later that night I take the

[10:14]

body to the crawl

[10:18]

[Music]

[10:22]

space the next day I have to figure out

[10:26]

a way to dispose of the evidence bu a

[10:29]

knife a hunting

[10:34]

knife

[10:36]

I feel uncomfortable talking about it on

[10:38]

tape not knowing who's going to be

[10:43]

listening um this part do you guys need

[10:47]

this on

[10:51]

tape I'll just give you the general

[10:54]

description go back the next night slit

[10:57]

the belly open cut each

[11:01]

piece bagged each

[11:03]

piece it was trial and

[11:07]

error I really didn't know that much

[11:10]

about the anatomy at the time I didn't

[11:13]

know how to dispose of the remains but

[11:16]

once I started doing it it became

[11:19]

sexually exciting to

[11:22]

me Jeffrey D's first recollection of

[11:25]

arousal to that site was a visit to a

[11:30]

museum that had sections of the human

[11:36]

[Music]

[11:38]

body I'm Dr Park Deets I'm a forensic

[11:41]

psychiatrist I was asked by the

[11:44]

prosecution to evaluate Mr

[11:49]

dmer he was transfixed by this

[11:52]

particular

[11:55]

exhibit and he recollected with me

[11:58]

finding it rousing to look at the shiny

[12:01]

lining of the viscera the internal

[12:04]

organs it is a biological fact that

[12:08]

shiny materials are more easily

[12:12]

associated with sexual arousal than dull

[12:16]

materials lingerie that's made of satin

[12:20]

uh leather

[12:23]

nylon for dmer instead of being aroused

[12:26]

to what most men are he became aroused

[12:29]

to the shiny surface of

[12:34]

viscera that night in Ohio that one

[12:37]

impulse of night nothing's been normal

[12:39]

since

[12:41]

then it tained your whole

[12:45]

life after it happened I thought I'd

[12:48]

just try to live as normally as possible

[12:51]

and bury

[12:53]

it but things like that don't stay

[12:57]

buried

[13:07]

[Music]

[13:23]

dmer took the bones put them in a bag

[13:27]

and smashed them with a hudge

[13:31]

Hammer then he spread him out in the

[13:33]

woods behind his

[13:37]

house they found teeth that were

[13:40]

identified as stepen

[13:43]

Hicks they also found the necklace that

[13:47]

D City threw in a river off a

[13:53]

bridge I spoke with liono dmer about his

[13:58]

son

[13:59]

and I informed him what we

[14:07]

found and he was taken back by

[14:14]

it I I was just dumbfounded I couldn't

[14:19]

believe

[14:21]

that that that he would do

[14:26]

that I felt very very sick about

[14:30]

it that the first victim was killed at

[14:34]

the bath Road

[14:37]

House my name is Lionel

[14:40]

dmer and I'm the father of Jeff

[14:49]

dmer he was born in

[14:53]

1960 at a house that we rented in

[14:55]

Milwaukee

[14:57]

Wisconsin

[15:02]

as a very young boy he was very happy

[15:06]

and he would run to me and jump into my

[15:14]

arms he liked to ride his little

[15:22]

tricycle and he used to like very much

[15:26]

to ride on the handlebars of my

[15:31]

bicycle when you look at the whole

[15:34]

movies you know you see a happy

[15:39]

[Music]

[15:43]

time we had a very close

[15:46]

relationship he wanted to be held and

[15:50]

and would come running up to me whenever

[15:53]

I'd come home from somewhere and uh he

[15:56]

just loved to be with me and his

[16:02]

mother I met Joyce in

[16:06]

Milwaukee she was outgoing and liked to

[16:09]

do new things and uh a very loving

[16:12]

person it seemed to

[16:17]

me when Joyce became pregnant with Jeff

[16:22]

she developed seizure type

[16:25]

symptoms and the doctors would prescribe

[16:28]

our bitrates and morphine to calm her

[16:30]

down because her body would become

[16:35]

rigid and she would develop a little bit

[16:38]

of foam in the

[16:42]

mouth unfortunately the doctors didn't

[16:45]

discover what it was

[16:57]

exactly the marriage was starting to

[17:01]

dissolve and I told Jeff and my youngest

[17:05]

son Dave she was advocating for a

[17:11]

divorce Jeff reacted

[17:15]

badly he went out and started slapping

[17:19]

trees with a

[17:22]

branch apparently because he felt like

[17:25]

he lost control

[17:29]

and he was obviously frustrated by

[17:34]

that I started shutting down during the

[17:38]

divorce

[17:40]

proceedings it was my way of shutting

[17:43]

out any painful thoughts just taking an

[17:46]

attitude of not caring to save myself

[17:50]

the pain of what was going on with the

[17:54]

divorce that was effective it worked

[17:58]

maybe it started

[18:01]

[Music]

[18:08]

then I don't think any of us thought of

[18:10]

Jeff dmer as a bad guy in high

[18:13]

school I knew him as a different

[18:17]

person one day I'm standing there in the

[18:19]

hallway Jeff dber runs up to me and he

[18:23]

puts his head on my

[18:25]

chest and I I'm like hey what are you

[18:27]

doing what going on and then he stands

[18:30]

up in his straight Manner and he says I

[18:33]

wanted to hear what your heart sounds

[18:35]

like and then he ran away down the

[18:38]

[Music]

[18:41]

hall my name is Mike krol and I've known

[18:44]

Jeffrey dmer all during our teenage

[18:46]

years as a classmate in

[18:50]

school the Jeff dmer fan club was a

[18:54]

group of us who thought Jeff dmer was

[18:56]

just a funny kid because he would be

[18:59]

into doing pranks and Goofy

[19:03]

things my favorite thing that Jeff dmer

[19:07]

did was in the library and we had a

[19:10]

pretty tough

[19:12]

librarian Jeff would be sitting there

[19:14]

with his face in the book not even

[19:15]

looking up and he would Shout at the top

[19:18]

of his lungs her name real fast and

[19:21]

really loud and she would get up and she

[19:24]

would be W who said that who is

[19:27]

that never never did she suspect it was

[19:31]

Jeff

[19:32]

dmer he could get away with things for a

[19:35]

long time and not get caught and we

[19:37]

learned that later from him

[19:41]

too people started talking about his

[19:44]

drinking when he was about 17 years old

[19:47]

Jeff drank whatever he could get his

[19:49]

hands

[19:52]

on beer whiskey or even

[19:57]

scotch

[19:59]

he would come home drunk from high

[20:03]

school the drinking got worse and worse

[20:06]

and I talked about the dangers of him

[20:10]

continuing but I think at that point he

[20:13]

was just so addicted physically and

[20:17]

mentally it wasn't social drinking at a

[20:20]

party it was regular drinking before

[20:23]

during and after school and I think

[20:26]

that's how he got through the day he was

[20:28]

becoming sort of a lost

[20:40]

person well these are the high school

[20:42]

yearbooks from River High when I was

[20:44]

there along with Jeff dmer the most

[20:47]

famous photograph in our yearbook is one

[20:50]

of D's pranks and this is the photograph

[20:54]

right here in our senior year they took

[20:57]

phot photographs of all the groups they

[20:59]

took photographs of uh the sports groups

[21:02]

and the clubs and everything else and

[21:05]

Jeff dmer got in group photos that he

[21:07]

was not a member of the

[21:09]

group and I think the funniest one is

[21:12]

the National Honor Society which is

[21:13]

supposed to be the brightest kids right

[21:15]

the smartest

[21:16]

kids and definitely our senior year Jeff

[21:19]

dmer was not in that group academically

[21:22]

but he's in this Photograph and I

[21:24]

believe it's the president of the group

[21:27]

had him blacked out

[21:30]

so in all the yearbooks there's this

[21:32]

body without a

[21:38]

head and that's one of the first things

[21:40]

I thought about when I heard he was

[21:41]

arrested for some reason I just remember

[21:44]

this strange photograph that is so

[21:46]

haunting today to look at and know that

[21:49]

this person right dead center in the

[21:51]

middle is Jeffrey

[21:57]

dmer

[21:58]

I think we're fascinated by Dahmer's

[22:00]

childhood because it was a more normal

[22:05]

childhood he wasn't in reform school he

[22:09]

wasn't arrested as a

[22:11]

kid he had a family around him he had

[22:14]

parents and brother and he had a nice

[22:16]

[Music]

[22:22]

home how could someone possibly do the

[22:25]

things he did given his background he

[22:28]

had everything going for him what

[22:31]

happened when I was a little kid I was

[22:35]

just like anybody else I should have got

[22:38]

a college degree gone into real estate

[22:42]

that's what I should have done I don't

[22:44]

know what was going through my mind

[22:46]

these thoughts are very

[22:49]

powerful very

[22:51]

destructive and they do not

[22:56]

leave

[23:06]

during the investigation we had to

[23:08]

establish a timeline so we took all the

[23:11]

information we had where they lived

[23:15]

where they moved

[23:16]

through what school they went through

[23:19]

all their activities that we could

[23:22]

document and we meet up a

[23:25]

timeline everything that we know about

[23:28]

Jeffrey D's crimes we know because of

[23:30]

his confession there was a desire on his

[23:33]

part to just unburden himself of all

[23:36]

this information and when he spoke to

[23:38]

the detectives dmer really was telling

[23:41]

his own life

[23:46]

[Music]

[23:51]

story I guess she's what you could call

[23:55]

uh perfect grandmother very kind goes to

[24:00]

church every

[24:06]

Sunday I started going to church with my

[24:10]

grandma I wanted to straighten my life

[24:13]

out read the Bible tried to push out any

[24:17]

sexual thoughts at

[24:19]

all I was doing pretty well for about 2

[24:23]

[Music]

[24:24]

years but sure enough I started the

[24:29]

compulsion the

[24:31]

drive increased sexual desires I started

[24:36]

drinking

[24:37]

[Music]

[24:39]

again dmer had a couple arrests for

[24:42]

indecent

[24:44]

exposure one he said he was

[24:48]

urinating and the other one was at the

[24:50]

State

[24:52]

Fair rubbed up against the guy in front

[24:55]

of about 20 people

[24:59]

in west Dallas there was some lwd and

[25:02]

lascivious behavior in a park that um I

[25:06]

was involved in there was no assault it

[25:11]

was just

[25:13]

masturbation he was charged with

[25:15]

disorderly conduct exposing himself to

[25:18]

people and he had a years

[25:23]

probation I wanted to find a way to

[25:26]

satisfy myself

[25:28]

without hurting

[25:30]

anyone so I joined the bath Club went to

[25:35]

gay

[25:39]

[Music]

[25:40]

bars the gay area in Milwaukee was down

[25:43]

on Second Street First Street it was

[25:47]

kind of a close society and

[25:50]

dmer knew the area and that was his

[25:54]

hunting

[25:56]

ground the gay City in Milwaukee was

[25:59]

very

[26:02]

big my name is Greg Shirley and I lived

[26:05]

in milwauke in the

[26:09]

1980s you had 219 you had

[26:13]

Lage and uh you had Park Avenue where I

[26:17]

worked it was quite the scene you never

[26:20]

knew what was going to happen at Park

[26:22]

Avenue let me tell

[26:26]

you you have people dancing and taking

[26:29]

their clothes

[26:32]

off where 219 was that area was pretty

[26:37]

sey seedy

[26:41]

place it was a lot of fun I have to

[26:43]

admit it a lot of

[26:47]

excitement just being out in the crowd

[26:50]

in that type of

[26:52]

atmosphere not having to pretend that I

[26:55]

was something that I wasn't

[26:58]

you know and watching The Strip

[27:01]

teas there's some pretty good

[27:08]

ones these multif floored clubs stay

[27:11]

open till about 4:00 in the

[27:13]

morning then they'd have the bath

[27:16]

houses spend the rest of the night in

[27:21]

those dmer told us in the bath houses

[27:26]

people had a separate dressing room and

[27:29]

guys would go in and hook up and have

[27:32]

sex or

[27:34]

whatever anything

[27:37]

goes the Only Rule they had in that

[27:39]

place is that if a person said

[27:42]

no no was no and he had success there

[27:46]

for a time where he'd be able to hook up

[27:49]

with a man but he began to want to spend

[27:53]

more time with the men that he found

[27:56]

attractive enough to hook up with

[27:58]

with they were all one night stands they

[28:02]

made it clear that they had to be back

[28:04]

at work and I didn't want them to go and

[28:07]

so he began drugging their

[28:10]

drinks a lot of the people I met wanted

[28:13]

anal sex I wasn't interested in that I

[28:17]

wanted to find a way to spend the night

[28:19]

with them enjoy them without having to

[28:22]

perform

[28:24]

that he always woke up with someone and

[28:28]

give him helan so they passed out helian

[28:31]

is a sleeping pill Jeff would start off

[28:35]

with one or two the more he use the

[28:38]

sooner the people would go out and the

[28:40]

more control he

[28:45]

had using about five pills usually

[28:49]

rendered them

[28:51]

unconscious for about 4

[28:55]

hours it was the only only way I knew to

[28:58]

keep them there and keep them with me it

[29:01]

gave me a sense of control and increased

[29:06]

the sexual

[29:08]

thrill I trained myself to view people

[29:11]

as objects of potential

[29:14]

pleasure instead of seeing them as

[29:17]

complete human

[29:19]

beings sounds

[29:21]

callous and it is but that's what I

[29:26]

did

[29:27]

Jeffrey dmer was looking for a sexual

[29:32]

partner who would not demand anything of

[29:35]

him who would not criticize him who most

[29:40]

importantly wouldn't have quick sex and

[29:44]

then leave he had a series of unpleasant

[29:48]

sexual encounters with other

[29:50]

men uh none of which involved what he

[29:53]

really wanted which was to snuggle to

[29:58]

hug to feel each other's warmth to um be

[30:03]

able to fondle gently to spend the whole

[30:07]

night together without demanding

[30:11]

more once I had the

[30:14]

opportunity and place where I could

[30:18]

actually make these fantasies come

[30:21]

true then trying to hold them back just

[30:25]

seemed to be too much

[30:28]

desire grew and grew more

[30:31]

constant

[30:33]

stronger I mean it was the main focus of

[30:36]

my

[30:38]

life first thing I did was head to the

[30:41]

porno shops make plans to watch The

[30:44]

Strip

[30:45]

TX my whole life revolved around that

[30:50]

schedule and that worked for him though

[30:53]

not for his victims for a period of time

[30:57]

until one

[30:59]

night he gave too much medication to a

[31:03]

victim and paramedics had to be called

[31:06]

and they banned dmer from that bath

[31:10]

house they complained about

[31:13]

me use the excuse that I was an

[31:17]

alcoholic I wanted to find a way to

[31:20]

satisfy myself without hurting

[31:23]

anyone that's when I I started using the

[31:29]

mannequin it occurred to him that a

[31:33]

mannequin might be sufficient to meet

[31:36]

his

[31:37]

needs and so he hid in a department

[31:41]

store restroom till after closing

[31:44]

emerged to steal a male

[31:48]

mannequin I had a big sleeping bag cover

[31:52]

I put it in that zipped it up and

[31:55]

carried it out of the store

[31:58]

he managed to get it home to his

[32:00]

grandmother's house and was using that

[32:03]

to cuddle in his grandma's

[32:06]

basement I just went through various

[32:10]

sexual fantasies with it pretending it

[32:13]

was a real

[32:16]

person that I was having sex with it

[32:20]

masturbating and undressing

[32:24]

it my mother told me about the mannequin

[32:26]

that Jeff had taken from a

[32:30]

store and

[32:32]

uh I didn't know what that was all

[32:37]

about and I asked him why he took it

[32:41]

Jeff said I just wanted to see if I

[32:43]

could do

[32:44]

it which didn't make

[32:48]

sense it's really unusual for someone to

[32:51]

think that a mannequin would fulfill

[32:53]

their sexual needs but it's not so

[32:56]

different from the use of inflatable

[33:02]

sextiles now there's actually a

[33:04]

condition focused specifically on that

[33:07]

called

[33:09]

pygmalionism there are individuals who

[33:11]

become erotically fixated on inanimate

[33:16]

figures of human

[33:19]

form it satisfied me for a short time

[33:23]

but never drove that desire for the

[33:27]

ultimate fulfillment and

[33:31]

satisfaction that could only be done I

[33:34]

thought actually having control over

[33:46]

someone when I flew to Milwaukee to

[33:49]

first see Mr

[33:51]

darmer people have in mind what a serial

[33:54]

killer is supposed to be like he was

[33:55]

being referred to as a a

[33:58]

monster but he just looked like some

[34:00]

college kid I could never have imagined

[34:03]

that he would have done what he

[34:07]

did my name is Fred Berlin and I'm an

[34:10]

associate professor in the department of

[34:12]

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at

[34:14]

the John hins University School of

[34:20]

Medicine Mr darer told me he had met

[34:23]

Steve toomi and he had agreed to go with

[34:26]

him to the ambass

[34:33]

Hotel he was a nice looking guy and we

[34:37]

drank we got undressed laid

[34:41]

around body

[34:43]

rubs and I found him attractive enough

[34:47]

that I wanted to keep

[34:50]

him so I just made him the

[34:55]

drink and that was

[34:58]

that and what he told me he thinks

[35:00]

happened is he mistakenly drank some of

[35:03]

that as

[35:07]

well he wakes up finding that he's next

[35:10]

to Mr Tomy who is now

[35:18]

dead I remember nothing before waking up

[35:22]

in the

[35:23]

morning he was on his back his head was

[35:26]

over over the edge of the

[35:28]

bed and my forearms were

[35:33]

bruised and he had broken ribs and

[35:37]

everything apparently I had beaten him

[35:41]

to

[35:43]

death I couldn't believe it had happened

[35:46]

again after all those

[35:49]

years it's almost like I temporarily

[35:52]

lost control of

[35:55]

myself man and then he tells me his

[35:58]

focus is upon trying to get rid of the

[36:01]

dead body without being

[36:05]

apprehended I go down to the Grand Mall

[36:08]

buy a large suitcase put him in

[36:13]

that that following night about 1:00 in

[36:16]

the morning I check

[36:19]

out get a taxi the guy helped me put the

[36:22]

bag in the

[36:24]

back right to Grandma's

[36:28]

I take the suitcase put it in the fruit

[36:33]

Celler and leave it there for about a

[36:39]

week it was

[36:42]

November

[36:45]

cold when my grandma goes to church for

[36:49]

a couple of hours I uh go down and get

[36:55]

it take take a knife def flesh the body

[36:59]

triple bag the flesh wrap the skeleton

[37:03]

up in an old bed sheet Smash It Up with

[37:06]

a um sledgehammer and throw it all out

[37:09]

in the trash on Monday

[37:14]

morning I along with two other

[37:17]

detectives went to Grandma's

[37:21]

house we checked the entire bage for any

[37:24]

type of evidence and we did recover a

[37:29]

sludgehammer but we checked with luminol

[37:31]

for blood and couldn't find any blood or

[37:35]

bones after that killing Mr dmer really

[37:39]

began to deteriorate now instead of

[37:41]

going to church and praying it was

[37:43]

almost like a re reverse religious

[37:45]

conversion maybe there's a devil maybe

[37:48]

this is my purpose in life maybe I'm

[37:49]

supposed to be um doing

[37:54]

this from then on

[37:57]

it was a craving uh a

[38:03]

hunger I just kept doing it doing it and

[38:08]

doing it whenever the opportunity

[38:11]

presented

[38:19]

itself it was an incessant and

[38:23]

NeverEnding desire to have someone

[38:28]

at whatever

[38:29]

cost someone

[38:33]

goodlooking it just filled my thoughts

[38:36]

all day

[38:38]

long increasing in intensity throughout

[38:41]

the years when I was living with

[38:44]

[Music]

[38:53]

Grandma I spoke to his grandma and she

[38:56]

was a churchgoing

[38:58]

woman she did say she thought he had

[39:02]

homosexual tendencies because he would

[39:06]

bring people over to the house and take

[39:08]

them in the

[39:14]

basement my name is Ron flowers and I

[39:17]

met Jeffrey dmer in Milwaukee in uh

[39:25]

1988

[39:27]

we had a group of friendss that used to

[39:29]

go up to this

[39:33]

nightclub Club

[39:37]

219 Saturday night it was a pretty

[39:40]

normal

[39:41]

night lot of dancing Everybody laughing

[39:45]

just just having a good

[39:47]

time I left around

[39:55]

115 my car was parked across the

[40:01]

street but when I tried to start it it

[40:04]

wouldn't

[40:05]

start this man came up to me he said are

[40:08]

you having

[40:09]

trouble so I explained to him I had some

[40:13]

trouble with my

[40:16]

car and he said but I I live close by if

[40:20]

you want we can just go to my house pick

[40:23]

up my car and come back and then we'll

[40:25]

get you going

[40:27]

so I said

[40:30]

okay he introduced himself as

[40:37]

Jeff we walked up the front walkway and

[40:40]

to the side of the

[40:44]

house the first thing he did when we

[40:47]

went in there is he took out a bottle of

[40:50]

alcohol and he said do you want to drink

[40:53]

I got a little upset and I said I I

[40:57]

already told you I'm here to get my car

[41:00]

and that's

[41:02]

it so he said okay I I understand um but

[41:06]

I'm going to make myself a coup of

[41:08]

coffee so I said

[41:12]

okay I was drinking the coffee kind of

[41:16]

quickly and I finished

[41:19]

it I said okay let's go and he said well

[41:23]

just a

[41:25]

minute he was staring at me in a way

[41:28]

that was scary it was almost like he was

[41:31]

waiting for something to

[41:34]

happen and I got really dizzy and I just

[41:39]

went

[41:41]

forward and the last thing I saw was the

[41:45]

floor and his

[41:51]

shoes it was sheer

[41:55]

Terror

[42:05]

my next memory was waking up in the

[42:09]

[Music]

[42:10]

hospital I knew that he had drugged me I

[42:14]

couldn't figure out

[42:17]

why I was just surprised to be

[42:21]

alive all of my muscles hurt and there

[42:25]

was a ligature

[42:28]

Mark around my

[42:37]

neck

[42:38]

um this is the hardest part to talk

[42:43]

about I looked

[42:47]

down and I noticed that my underwear

[42:51]

were inside

[42:55]

out and when I the thing that set me

[42:59]

over the edge was when I looked closer I

[43:02]

saw a blonde hair on the inside of my

[43:06]

clothing it was a human head

[43:11]

hair it it was a nightmare it was um

[43:24]

devastating I went to the police

[43:26]

Department I told them that I was

[43:29]

drugged and I was sexually

[43:36]

[Music]

[43:41]

assaulted he told them that we had been

[43:44]

drinking all night long and that we were

[43:46]

both very

[43:47]

drunk we were in a relationship when we

[43:50]

had

[43:52]

trouble he helped me get on the bus and

[43:54]

that was the last that he saw

[43:58]

me after this the police start getting

[44:01]

kind of funny I told them I told you I

[44:04]

have never seen this guy

[44:09]

before the police told me that he had a

[44:12]

criminal

[44:15]

record they told me well it's his word

[44:19]

against your word I said you're taking

[44:23]

the word over a convicted Criminal

[44:26]

over the word of someone who's never

[44:28]

been in trouble in their life and they

[44:31]

just kind of shrugged it

[44:34]

off I decided there was nothing else

[44:36]

that I'm going to be able to tell them

[44:39]

that's going to make them look into

[44:41]

[Music]

[44:42]

him I stood up and I said you're going

[44:45]

to catch this

[44:47]

exploitive one

[44:50]

day and then I turned and walked out I

[44:54]

knew he's going going to do this

[44:58]

again I just knew

[45:03]

that my mother told me about Jeff's

[45:07]

having some strange men into their

[45:12]

house my mother said that uh she had saw

[45:16]

this person stumbling from our

[45:20]

house that was alarming I didn't want

[45:23]

anything to happen to my mother

[45:28]

there was pressure from my grandma and

[45:31]

Dad I guess you could say I was sort of

[45:34]

eased out word had gotten out about my

[45:39]

late night

[45:41]

activities so they thought it would be

[45:44]

better to just move

[45:49]

out he had moved from Grandma's House to

[45:52]

808 nor 24th

[45:54]

Street dmer purchased a Polaroid camera

[45:58]

after his first few victims and then he

[46:01]

started taking Polaroids of

[46:05]

[Music]

[46:10]

them he had 85 photos 13

[46:15]

victims and he would pose them in a

[46:17]

particular fashion with their legs bent

[46:21]

on their back and their hands behind

[46:23]

their

[46:24]

heads and he'd open their eyes sometimes

[46:28]

or open their

[46:29]

mouth and then he would take pictures of

[46:32]

cutting up his

[46:36]

victims the pictures weren't as

[46:40]

fulfilling as actually having someone

[46:45]

there it was a Sunday morning walking

[46:49]

along the street wanted some sexual

[46:53]

activity saw him and attractive guy

[46:57]

offered him $50 for some pictures he

[47:02]

agreed s sa since in phone he was 14 at

[47:06]

the

[47:07]

time he went to his apartment and dmer

[47:12]

gave him p

[47:15]

and samac walked

[47:20]

out dmer was subsequently arrested for

[47:24]

second degree sexual assault

[47:28]

it was terribly difficult I just

[47:31]

couldn't really deal with

[47:34]

it it affected me very

[47:38]

greatly I did question about it what

[47:41]

exactly did you think you were

[47:43]

doing no answer no good answer at

[47:47]

all dmer ended up leading guilty through

[47:50]

assaulting samac siston phone and he was

[47:55]

sentenced to a year in the house of

[47:57]

correction work release and then 5 years

[48:06]

[Music]

[48:14]

probation I always wanted the best for

[48:17]

Jeff

[48:21]

always I just hoped against hope that he

[48:24]

would improve or talk about things and

[48:28]

and get things straightened out whatever

[48:30]

it is it's that's bothering

[48:36]

[Music]

[48:45]

him this is a letter that I wrote to

[48:49]

judge William

[48:51]

Gardner I am writing in regard to my son

[48:54]

Jeff dmer who is sched scheduled to be

[48:56]

released March

[48:58]

1990 I have reservations regarding

[49:01]

Jeff's chances when he hits the streets

[49:04]

I have experienced an extremely

[49:07]

frustrating time trying to urge

[49:10]

initiation of some type of

[49:13]

treatment I sincerely hope that you

[49:16]

might interv intervene in some way to

[49:19]

help my son who I love very much and for

[49:22]

whom I want a better life I do feel

[49:26]

though that this may be our last chance

[49:29]

to initiate something

[49:31]

lasting and that you can hold the key

[49:35]

sincerely yours Lionel

[49:54]

dmer

[49:58]

when I wrote that letter I remember

[50:00]

feeling someone's got to do

[50:03]

something I had no idea

[50:07]

that that would escalate to that to that

[50:12]

horrible

[50:19]

gruesome

[50:24]

situation

[50:37]

[Music]

[50:50]

[Music]

[50:54]

right now we're at where the Oxford

[50:56]

Apartments used to be before they tore

[50:58]

it down a few years

[51:05]

ago back in the early 90s this entire

[51:08]

area was considered to be a drug

[51:14]

City you would be walking down the

[51:16]

street and you would find bags of crack

[51:19]

on the

[51:21]

pavement and you'd have dealers standing

[51:24]

on the corners

[51:26]

everywhere you look you would see

[51:27]

someone selling

[51:31]

drugs the neighborhood was predominantly

[51:35]

black and Jeffrey dmer was the

[51:39]

only single white male that lived in the

[51:45]

area for him to choose this place was

[51:48]

ideal because the police were

[51:52]

concentrating for the drug activity

[51:55]

so he was hiding in plain

[51:58]

[Music]

[52:01]

sight I was willing to take my chances

[52:04]

in that neighborhood it was generally

[52:08]

quiet there wasn't a lot of distraction

[52:11]

or

[52:12]

noise a lot of

[52:15]

privacy it worked out

[52:20]

nicely the first time I met Jeffrey dmer

[52:23]

was when we were p passing each other in

[52:26]

the

[52:28]

hallway he lived in apartment 2113 and

[52:32]

we lived in apartment

[52:34]

214 we started talking to each

[52:38]

other he worked at the um brosure

[52:42]

Chocolate Factory downtown in

[52:45]

Milwaukee he was just a normal guy that

[52:48]

kept to

[52:49]

himself

[52:51]

and seemed like easy

[52:54]

going and I could not see him hurting

[52:57]

anyone not even a

[53:00]

[Music]

[53:03]

fly after having killed several

[53:06]

different men and disposed of their

[53:08]

remains dmer was feeling this is such a

[53:12]

waste he thought maybe I could

[53:16]

incorporate some of that person into

[53:19]

myself so they could live on in that

[53:24]

way

[53:28]

what he did was cook and eat a piece of

[53:32]

the bicep of a man that he had

[53:34]

particularly admired while looking at a

[53:37]

photograph of the

[53:39]

man that would be Rick

[53:43]

beaks his nickname was Cash D he had it

[53:47]

tattooed on his

[53:50]

chest he was working the bars and stuff

[53:53]

nail prostitute

[53:55]

save the heart the

[53:59]

biceps and I would uh cook

[54:05]

it

[54:07]

and then look at the

[54:10]

picture there's no way of saying it

[54:13]

without sounding uh

[54:16]

gruesome I don't know how to describe

[54:19]

it you've had filet Monon haven't you

[54:24]

yeah

[54:25]

very

[54:32]

tender it did give me some

[54:37]

satisfaction it made it feel like they

[54:40]

were more of a part of

[54:51]

[Music]

[54:54]

me

[54:57]

[Music]

[54:58]

so what have You' been doing lately

[55:00]

working and working and working and

[55:02]

working working next week starting uh

[55:04]

Monday I go back to work Sunday nights

[55:06]

oh uh so you go back to work this Sunday

[55:09]

night great

[55:12]

yeah you're looking good though look

[55:14]

nice trim oh that's good to hear you

[55:16]

look like you're working out no no I've

[55:19]

been surviving on McDonald's food for

[55:23]

you know since I moved down there

[55:30]

there was clearly progression over time

[55:32]

with dmer I'd referred to it more as a a

[55:37]

deterioration he'd always wanted to have

[55:40]

the sense that somehow these people

[55:42]

could live on with

[55:44]

him and then he got the very disturbed

[55:47]

idea well maybe they don't need to be

[55:49]

dead for them to live on with me maybe

[55:52]

they I could create this state between

[55:54]

life and death in which they could be a

[55:57]

[Music]

[55:59]

companion I

[56:01]

um wanted to see if it was possible to

[56:07]

make it sounds really gross

[56:10]

uh zombies people who would not have a

[56:13]

will of their own so I I started using

[56:17]

the drilling

[56:20]

technique he drilled a hole into the

[56:23]

skull and

[56:25]

inserted

[56:30]

acid that killed quickly so he gave up

[56:33]

on that then he started using more

[56:36]

dilute

[56:38]

acid so he's experimenting to try to

[56:41]

find a procedure that will allow him to

[56:44]

make a living compliant conscious sex

[56:53]

partner

[56:57]

I spoke to dmer about each and every one

[56:59]

of his

[57:00]

victims one of them conre synthes and

[57:04]

foam he had hoped was going to be a

[57:08]

success

[57:09]

story he had already drugged

[57:15]

him to D's surprise conr escaped the

[57:20]

apartment and ran down to the

[57:23]

street

[57:30]

my name is Nicole chis and in

[57:33]

1991 I tried to save a young 14-year-old

[57:37]

boy from a serial

[57:42]

killer well this was the

[57:45]

boy Conor sent us a

[57:53]

phone

[57:59]

I never talked about it I never talked

[58:02]

about

[58:03]

it I guess it's just time to to say

[58:06]

something and it's what how many years

[58:08]

almost

[58:12]

[Music]

[58:20]

30 I was in a car with some friends and

[58:24]

we were going over to my cousin

[58:28]

house I'm 17 at the

[58:32]

time I was looking out the

[58:35]

window I saw someone that appeared to

[58:38]

look

[58:40]

naked it was a young

[58:45]

boy they were kind of just

[58:47]

staggering and falling and stand down

[58:51]

for a little bit and get up fall back

[58:53]

down and I'm like look look

[58:57]

[Music]

[58:59]

look we was parked right

[59:02]

there I jump out I run from that

[59:06]

corner to all the

[59:09]

way by the time I got to him he was

[59:11]

about in the

[59:13]

middle of that gate right

[59:18]

there he was holding on to me with a

[59:21]

really really strong grip and he was

[59:24]

trembling he was

[59:28]

shaking so I just stayed with him and I

[59:30]

was like I'm going to get you some

[59:33]

help emergency operator 71 okay hi um

[59:37]

this um I'm on 25th EST State and this

[59:39]

this young man he is butt naked he has

[59:42]

been beaten up he's very bruised up he

[59:44]

can't stand he is butt nak he has no

[59:46]

clothes on he was really hurt and he

[59:48]

need some where where is he at on 25th

[59:51]

estate the corner of 25th estate and as

[59:54]

I was speak speaking to the operator

[59:57]

there was a man who

[60:01]

appeared a tall white nice looking

[60:07]

male he was coming toward the

[60:12]

boy and he ends up grabbing him by his

[60:16]

arm taking it behind his back and

[60:18]

yanking them up and forcing them and the

[60:20]

boy is you know kind of just trying to

[60:24]

get away but he can't cuz he he really

[60:29]

weak I ended up going across the street

[60:32]

I'm like excuse me I dial 911 help on

[60:35]

the way and he looking like oh no like

[60:39]

no no no he's like no he

[60:41]

[Music]

[60:43]

okay he Yanks the boy up and then I see

[60:46]

blood in his rectum when he yanked them

[60:48]

up like

[60:50]

that at this point I really get physical

[60:53]

like let him go you know you know he not

[60:56]

going with you he not going with

[61:00]

you I wasn't going to let him take

[61:03]

him we done struggle we in the street we

[61:07]

struggle from the street to the

[61:13]

alley but I hear these

[61:19]

cus fire department ended up coming

[61:23]

first they covered the boy with the

[61:29]

blanket and I'm flagging the police

[61:36]

car so when I get up there the police

[61:40]

chitchatting the man was saying he's my

[61:43]

friend he's okay he drunk and he

[61:45]

wandered

[61:47]

off he was very calm but when he spoke

[61:51]

about me he was rude and just

[61:55]

disrespectful he calling me another

[61:58]

crazy black

[62:00]

[ __ ] um something wrong with her she

[62:03]

did she did she did you know what I'm

[62:04]

saying and they like and I'm like excuse

[62:06]

me I'm out of breath but I'm like excuse

[62:08]

me I don't think he know him because he

[62:11]

was saying and they was like wait we'll

[62:12]

get to you said it really nice we'll get

[62:15]

to you don't we we'll talk to

[62:22]

you I waited I waited those people

[62:24]

people didn't even look at me they

[62:26]

didn't make no contact with me I said

[62:29]

you know what let me go in here to my

[62:30]

auntie house real

[62:32]

fast I went to my auntie house in and

[62:36]

out told her like right now the police

[62:38]

it's a young boy something ain't

[62:42]

right come back outside police car

[62:47]

gone fire truck

[62:51]

gone just gone everybody everybody

[62:55]

[Music]

[63:07]

gone so I really didn't really know 100%

[63:10]

if he ended up going to the hospital um

[63:15]

it shook me that I didn't know for sure

[63:17]

because I definitely didn't want him to

[63:18]

go back with him and so I talked to my

[63:21]

auntie and I was telling her like maybe

[63:24]

you could I don't know call to

[63:26]

see hell please yes uh that was a squad

[63:32]

c number 68 that was slag down earlier

[63:34]

this evening about 15 minutes ago that

[63:37]

was me yeah uh what happened I mean my

[63:41]

daughters and my niece uh witnessed what

[63:44]

was going on was anything done about the

[63:45]

situation do you need that names or no

[63:48]

information or anything from them no not

[63:50]

at all you don't no that's intoxicated

[63:54]

uh boyfriend of another

[63:57]

boyfriend well how old was this child it

[64:00]

wasn't a child it was an adult are you

[64:04]

sure I'm

[64:06]

17 at the time so and he looks younger

[64:09]

than

[64:10]

me and so I mean it was obvious he is a

[64:14]

kid he is a kid yeah no he's uh he's

[64:18]

it's all taken care of

[64:20]

ma'am he's not a child no he's not okay

[64:24]

and it's a a boyfriend boyfriend thing

[64:27]

and he's got belongings at the house

[64:29]

where uh where he came

[64:32]

from got the very uh pictures of himself

[64:36]

and his boyfriend and so forth so oh I

[64:38]

see okay oh okay thank okay okay bye

[64:42]

bye when my auntie made the call and

[64:46]

they clarified they gave him back he's

[64:51]

with his lover so they're good I'm

[64:54]

knowing it's not

[64:57]

good I felt terrible because I felt in

[65:00]

my soul that it was not

[65:04]

[Music]

[65:06]

right if I'd been thinking rationally I

[65:11]

would have

[65:14]

stopped I um wasn't thinking rationally

[65:18]

because it just increased and

[65:21]

[Music]

[65:22]

increased I was very very careful for

[65:25]

years and years you know

[65:29]

uh very careful about making sure

[65:32]

nothing incriminating

[65:35]

remained but uh these last few months

[65:39]

they just went

[65:45]

nuts the bodies were piling

[65:47]

up he had to figure out a way to get rid

[65:51]

of all of these

[65:53]

bodies

[65:57]

so he went to the hardware store and

[65:59]

found the biggest Barrel that he could

[66:03]

find and he decided that if he filled

[66:06]

that with muriatic acid he would be able

[66:10]

to dissolve the body

[66:16]

parts there was a night where the smell

[66:20]

woke me

[66:22]

up the first thing I thought was that

[66:24]

our cat had took a poop on our kitchen

[66:29]

table and it turned out that the smell

[66:32]

was coming from apartment 213 Jeff's

[66:38]

apartment the next morning I went to

[66:42]

work and my wife she waited for him to

[66:45]

come

[66:46]

home she was

[66:49]

filing and he told her that his freezer

[66:51]

had stopped working overnight in the me

[66:54]

had

[66:57]

spoiled I totally believed his

[67:05]

story I was completely swept along with

[67:09]

my own compulsion I don't know how else

[67:11]

to put

[67:13]

it it um didn't satisfy me completely so

[67:18]

maybe I was thinking another one

[67:21]

will maybe this one will and and uh the

[67:25]

numbers start growing and growing and

[67:28]

growing that's

[67:32]

cousin complete overload I just couldn't

[67:36]

control it

[67:52]

anymore

[67:59]

[Music]

[68:05]

I believe that Mr darmer just became

[68:07]

more and more out of control as time

[68:08]

went

[68:10]

along he he'd given up and made less of

[68:13]

an effort to uh not be

[68:18]

[Music]

[68:22]

detected dmer had met a guy named Tracy

[68:27]

Edwards and invite him over his

[68:29]

apartment to pose for him and he give

[68:32]

her

[68:33]

money I didn't have any sleeping pills

[68:36]

that

[68:37]

time I had planned on getting him real

[68:42]

drunk so he tried to persuade teresy to

[68:46]

let him handcuff him and take pictures

[68:47]

of him in

[68:50]

bondage and then th threatened him with

[68:53]

a knife

[68:55]

he got this knife you

[68:58]

know like pointed at

[69:01]

me he asked me could he put his head on

[69:04]

my chest and listen to my heartbeat

[69:06]

right he told me when he eat a part of

[69:09]

my heart I would be a part of him he

[69:10]

would be a part of me I told him I got

[69:13]

to go to the bathroom so as I was

[69:15]

walking P the guy I hit him right and I

[69:18]

kicked him you know kicked him in the

[69:20]

face like and then he just like went

[69:22]

back and then I ran for the

[69:25]

dooring so now he's running down the

[69:27]

street with a handcuff dangling from his

[69:29]

arm and two police officers see

[69:33]

him he started to tell the officers what

[69:36]

he had

[69:37]

seen and the officers decided to go with

[69:42]

him back to where this had

[69:45]

occurred dmer when he saw it was the

[69:48]

police tried to shut the door there was

[69:50]

a bit of a

[69:51]

scuffle it was say he's got a knife in

[69:54]

the bedroom he threatened me so one

[69:57]

officer went into the bedroom and he saw

[70:00]

a knife under the

[70:03]

bed teracy Edwards also said there's

[70:06]

something in the refrigerator so the

[70:08]

other officer opened the door and

[70:11]

screamed what he saw was a head on the

[70:14]

bottom shelf with the eyes and mouth

[70:16]

wide

[70:18]

[Music]

[70:20]

open then they jumped on dber and

[70:22]

arrested him

[70:28]

police in Wisconsin this morning are

[70:29]

investigating a Grizzly Discovery in a

[70:32]

Milwaukee apartment the discovery of

[70:34]

pieces of bodies police found parts of

[70:36]

as many as 15 human bodies inside police

[70:39]

were LED there by a man who told them

[70:41]

he'd been attacked with a butcher

[70:47]

knife a moment in that horrible evening

[70:52]

that I remember very clearly

[70:55]

was that it was quiet when they brought

[70:56]

that Barrel

[70:57]

[Music]

[71:01]

out there were a

[71:04]

few that you could hear in the

[71:07]

crowd but by then word was getting out

[71:11]

about what people had been living next

[71:15]

to and now we found out he's got dead

[71:19]

bodies in

[71:21]

it how does that make you feel it's

[71:23]

shocking it's terrible you know and here

[71:26]

I stay right across the hall from this

[71:31]

guy there are uh 11 uh individuals or

[71:36]

parts thereof that were recovered and

[71:38]

those would include 11 intact uh

[71:43]

skulls the suspect May well have been

[71:46]

involved in at least 17

[71:52]

homicides this smell and in the amount

[71:54]

of body parts that they found was

[72:01]

unbelievable the atmosphere was pretty

[72:07]

[Music]

[72:14]

solemn through the Polaroids that dmer

[72:17]

had in his

[72:19]

drawer we identified Conor sensors and

[72:22]

phone as one of his

[72:33]

[Music]

[72:35]

victims I could not believe it it was

[72:39]

just too

[72:41]

much they showed me pictures of Conor's

[72:47]

head cut

[72:50]

off they show me pictures of

[72:54]

of his his his

[73:01]

body my mind was going just all over the

[73:06]

place he was molesting them

[73:09]

photographing him cut his genit tell do

[73:11]

you know that did you know that he cut

[73:14]

his genit I

[73:17]

mean looking at that picture confirmed a

[73:20]

nightmare a real life nightmare

[73:27]

Milwaukee has been stunned not only by

[73:29]

the killings but by reports law

[73:31]

enforcement returned a 14-year-old boy

[73:34]

battered and bleeding back into dharma's

[73:36]

custody one night two months ago I

[73:38]

wasn't dmer discovered sooner before he

[73:41]

had a chance to murder up to 17 people

[73:43]

it should have been investigated right

[73:46]

then and there and I don't feel the cops

[73:48]

are doing their

[73:50]

job the police department individuals

[73:52]

who resp responded failed to conduct a

[73:55]

basic proper police investigation into

[73:58]

the

[73:59]

matter basic law enforcement practices

[74:02]

were not followed do we it acted

[74:04]

differently that

[74:06]

night they both got fired but then they

[74:08]

got their jobs

[74:11]

back one of them is a police chief on

[74:14]

the suburb

[74:20]

now my trust in the police system

[74:23]

because of

[74:24]

that is just awful it's so

[74:29]

awful I get still upset thinking about

[74:32]

that cuz it just shouldn't have

[74:35]

happened so it bothers me it's going to

[74:37]

always bother

[74:39]

me I wish I could have just found some

[74:43]

type of brick or some type of stick that

[74:46]

night and never called the police and

[74:50]

just knocked them out and took the boy

[74:57]

I could have really took him like for

[74:59]

real like I could have took

[75:03]

him and then he could have

[75:08]

recovered and in his family you know

[75:11]

they would have to go through what they

[75:13]

went through

[75:22]

so

[75:25]

but I never talked about like you just

[75:27]

never know what a person to do you

[75:32]

never

[75:48]

so it's

[75:50]

a relief not to have any any secrets

[76:08]

anymore when dmer walked in the room it

[76:12]

was

[76:14]

hushed seeing Jeffrey dmer was kind of a

[76:17]

let down in some

[76:22]

ways nothing about him lives up to all

[76:26]

of the stories that we had been hearing

[76:30]

dmer has admitted to 17 murders this

[76:34]

trial will be to determine his State of

[76:36]

Mind If found insane he'll be sent to a

[76:38]

psychiatric facility from there dmer

[76:41]

could appeal for release every 6

[76:45]

months there was an old joke how many

[76:48]

people do he have to eat in Milwaukee to

[76:50]

be found

[76:51]

insane well it's it's not about uh how

[76:54]

many people are eaten or whether the

[76:57]

whole person is eaten what matters is

[77:00]

did the person know what they were doing

[77:03]

and did they know that it was

[77:06]

wrong that's all legal sanity is

[77:10]

about witness for the prosecution UCLA

[77:13]

psychiatrist Park Deets argues that dmer

[77:16]

is sane and in control of his actions

[77:19]

what is most appealing sexually to him

[77:22]

is having

[77:24]

control over another human in such a way

[77:28]

that he can make primarily gentle uses

[77:33]

of their body

[77:35]

sexually de says that during his murder

[77:38]

spree dmer knew what he was doing was

[77:40]

wrong and took precautions to avoid

[77:45]

detection I don't know how anyone could

[77:48]

come to the conclusion that somebody who

[77:50]

is ingesting human beings who believes

[77:54]

that they will live on through him who

[77:56]

thinks he can drill holes in the heads

[77:58]

of human beings and keep them alive as

[78:00]

zombies and I can go on and on how under

[78:03]

normal circumstances can one conclude

[78:05]

that that person doesn't have a mental

[78:08]

disorder in my medical opinion Mr dmer

[78:11]

was out of control and was becoming

[78:12]

progressively more out of control does

[78:14]

Mr dmer suffer from a mental disease

[78:17]

that causes him to lack substantial

[78:19]

capacity to conform his conduct to

[78:21]

requirements of law the answer to your

[78:23]

question is

[78:25]

yes it was a terrible situation all we

[78:28]

could do was sit there and listen to

[78:30]

them describing all kinds of terrible

[78:35]

things and it's just it was just

[78:37]

horrendous it was just bad really

[78:43]

bad ladies and gentlemen of the jury I

[78:46]

understand you have arrived at verdicts

[78:47]

in this

[78:50]

man state of Wisconsin versus Jeffrey Al

[78:53]

dmer at the time the crime was committed

[78:56]

did the defendant Jeffrey Al dmer have a

[78:59]

mental disease answer

[79:04]

no dmer is declared sane in all 15 cases

[79:08]

against him the jury concluded that

[79:11]

Jeffrey dmer was saying that is

[79:14]

responsible for his

[79:16]

behavior and I thought that they made

[79:19]

the right decision and listened to the

[79:20]

right

[79:21]

expert

[79:27]

it made me upset because I was told that

[79:30]

the best place for Jeff to be would be

[79:33]

in a psychiatric situation where they

[79:35]

could give him help whereas in prison

[79:39]

that you just don't get

[79:42]

that it was really uh very very tough to

[79:47]

hear very

[79:49]

very

[79:51]

tough and at the sentencing the family

[79:55]

members were invited to come up and to

[79:57]

make an impact statement you took my

[80:00]

17-year-old son away from me I'll never

[80:02]

get a chance to tell him that I loved

[80:04]

him I have a chance to tell him that I

[80:06]

love him the last time I saw him which

[80:08]

will be a year

[80:10]

tomorrow you took my daughter's only

[80:12]

brother away from her she'll never have

[80:15]

a chance to sing and dance with them

[80:17]

again and for that I can never forgive

[80:19]

you I hope

[80:21]

you I hope you can deal with what You'

[80:24]

done we lost he destroyed the baby of

[80:27]

the

[80:28]

family and I hope you go to

[80:32]

hell never Jeffrey Jeffrey I hate

[80:36]

you I hate

[80:40]

you

[80:42]

[Music]

[80:46]

you Jeff just sat there while she was

[80:49]

screaming and he just took it

[80:55]

[Music]

[81:05]

my feeling immediately when she did that

[81:07]

was this is to be expected I

[81:11]

would probably might do the same

[81:17]

[Music]

[81:21]

thing

[81:24]

Mr dmer you do have the right to address

[81:26]

the court at this

[81:35]

time your honor it is over now this has

[81:40]

never been a case of trying to get

[81:42]

free I didn't ever want freedom frankly

[81:46]

I wanted death for

[81:49]

myself I feel so bad for what I did to

[81:51]

those poor families

[81:53]

and I understand their rightful

[81:56]

hate I will have to turn to God to help

[81:59]

me get through each day I should have

[82:02]

stayed with God I tried and failed and

[82:05]

created a

[82:08]

holocaust I felt that that was

[82:11]

encouraging he's at least saying

[82:14]

something and he's really

[82:17]

sorry I felt that he

[82:20]

didn't really know why he did it but

[82:25]

that he was sorry that he did

[82:33]

[Music]

[82:46]

[Music]

[82:51]

it

[82:53]

[Music]

[82:56]

I still blame myself for not digging in

[83:00]

more deeply with Jeff at various times

[83:03]

to find out why he did what he did the

[83:06]

what he've been doing lately working and

[83:08]

working and working and working

[83:10]

ohy tell me something that makes any

[83:14]

kind of sense Jeff is why you doing

[83:20]

this why why were you doing

[83:24]

[Music]

[83:29]

this convicted serial killer Jeffrey

[83:32]

dmer was attacked this morning while

[83:34]

cleaning a prison bathroom he died of

[83:36]

massive head trauma on route to hospital

[83:39]

what was found at the scene was a bloody

[83:41]

boom handle that's all I know inmate

[83:43]

Christopher scarver is expected to be

[83:45]

charged with when I found out that Jeff

[83:48]

was

[83:49]

murdered it was just devastating

[83:53]

it affected me very

[83:57]

greatly I felt very badly about his

[84:00]

having been killed in prison I've often

[84:03]

wondered whether Lionel and I are the

[84:06]

only ones who grieved for

[84:12]

him it's just a nightmare let's put it

[84:15]

that

[84:16]

way it's been a nightmare for a long

[84:21]

time

[84:24]

for years

[84:26]

now obviously my mind has been filled

[84:30]

with gruesome horrible thoughts and

[84:34]

ideas a

[84:41]

nightmare this is the grand finale of a

[84:44]

life poorly

[84:47]

[Music]

[84:49]

spent I didn't want unanswered question

[84:54]

all the questions have now been

[85:04]

answered
