Build Your Own ChatGPT: Python AI Assistant Explained
What Happens When You Ask ChatGPT a Question?
When you type a question into ChatGPT, a simple process unfolds behind the scenes:
- Your Python program takes the user's question as input.
- It sends this question to the AI model.
- The AI model prepares and returns a response.
- Your Python program prints that response back to you.
This is essentially how every AI assistant works, and building this yourself is the first step to truly Mastering ChatGPT. It's much simpler than most people think.
What Is an AI Assistant?
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok are software applications that can:
- Answer questions on any topic
- Explain concepts in simple terms
- Write emails and documents
- Generate computer programs
- Summarize long documents
- Translate languages (e.g., English to Hindi or Russian)
- Brainstorm ideas creatively
While this project focuses on the core concept, understanding the Essential Updates and Features for 2024 will help you build a more capable system.
Critical Distinction: AI Assistant vs. AI Agent
| Feature | AI Assistant | AI Agent | |---------|-------------|----------| | Responds to instructions | ✅ | ✅ | | Decides what to do independently | ❌ | ✅ | | Plans actions | ❌ | ✅ | | Uses external tools | Limited | ✅ | | Remembers information | Basic | Advanced | | Takes actions | ❌ | ✅ |
AI Assistant: Responds to your instructions but does not decide what to do on its own. ChatGPT only gives you information, it does not take any action.
AI Agent: Has additional abilities like planning, using tools, remembering information, and most importantly, taking actions independently. For a practical example of an agent, see how you can Build AI Agents with Microsoft Copilot Studio.
Today's Project: Build Your Own ChatGPT Clone
What We Will Build
A Python program where:
- User asks a question
- The question is sent to an AI model
- An intelligent response is received and displayed
- The conversation can continue like a real chat
Why Start with an AI Assistant?
Just like you don't start learning to drive with a Formula 1 car, you shouldn't begin building AI agents without first understanding AI assistants. This project is your "normal car" before the "racing car" of AI agents. Key Learning Objectives
- Understand the input-process-output flow of AI assistants
- Learn how Python programs interact with AI models
- Build a foundation for creating more advanced AI agents
- Recognize the difference between information delivery (assistant) and autonomous action (agent)

[Prev: Introduction to AI Agents] | [Next: Basic Python Setup]
Want to build an AI agent that takes actions? We cover that in the next module!
I am Panka Shukla and we start this session. Imagine you want to ask Chad GPT a
question. So what you do? You type explain artificial intelligence in simple words or any other questions. For
example, what is Newton's law? Any kind of question you ask to the Chad GPT. Then what happens within a few seconds?
Chat GPT gives you an answer. Have you ever wondered what actually happens behind the scene? Actually, it
is much simpler than most people think. What is the process? It is like this. You ask a question
and your Python programs takes that question. So your Python program takes that question as input. After it takes
that question, it sends this question to the AI model. [clears throat] What it does? It sends it to the AI model. AI
model returns the response. So what AI model does is it returns the response. After the response is returned to your
Python program, your Python program just prints that response to you. So it just prints this response
to you. So basically your Python programs take the input from the user that means the question and then it
sends that question to the AI model. AI model prepares the response sends it back to your Python program and your
Python program just prints that response. This is what the process is. Now what basically an AI assistant is?
So chat GPT Germany grock these are AI assistant. So what basically an AI assistant is? Is
it is it a software application that can understand your instructions and generate useful responses. For example,
it can answer your questions, right? It can explain the concepts. It can write the emails. It can generate computer
programs. It can summarize the document. It can translate the languages for example from
English to Hindi to Russian. And it also help you brainstorm ideas. So you must be using some kind of AI assistant right
now like chat GPT or Germany what I have told you. So notice something very important. What
is that? The AI assistant responds to your instructions. It does not decide what to do on its
own. That difference becomes very important later on when we build AI agents.
Right now what I am talking about is AI assistant not AI agents. But we have to understand the difference for now. Think
of today's project which we are going to build today as your own personal version of chat GPT. So today we are going to
make our own personal version of chat GPT through Python program. So since this course is about AI agents,
as I already told this course is about what? AI agents. You might wonder why are we building an AI assistant first?
That's a great question. So try to understand. You don't begin with a Formula 1 racing car if you want
to learn driving. What you start with is a normal car. Similarly, before building intelligent
AI agents, you must understand how an AI assistant works. So AI agent is simply an AI assistant plus something with an
additional ability such as planning, using tools, remembering information, taking actions. This is very important.
Taking actions. Your chat GPT does not take any action. It gives you only information. So that basically is AI
assistant. When we will make AI agent, it will also able to take independently few actions.
So what we will build today? We will build a Python program where user can ask a question.
That question we will send to an AI model and then we will get a intelligent response and we will display this
response and continue the conversation. I hope this is clear to you.
When you ask a question, your Python program captures the input, sends it to an AI model for processing, receives the AI-generated response, and then prints it back to you. This simple input-process-output loop is the core of how all AI assistants work, making the technology far more straightforward than most people imagine.
AI assistants can answer questions, explain complex concepts, write emails and documents, generate computer programs, summarize long texts, translate languages, and brainstorm creative ideas. They serve as versatile tools for productivity and learning, but they only respond to direct instructions rather than acting independently.
An AI assistant responds to your instructions but does not decide what to do on its own; it provides information without taking action. In contrast, an AI agent can independently plan, use external tools, remember information, and take actions autonomously—making it more like a proactive digital worker than a reactive helper.
In this project, you will build a Python program that lets users ask questions, sends those questions to an AI model, receives intelligent responses, and supports a continuous conversation just like a real chat. This hands-on exercise focuses on the core input-process-output flow, giving you a solid foundation before moving on to more complex AI agents.
Just as you learn to drive a normal car before a Formula 1 car, mastering an AI assistant first helps you understand basic interaction patterns and programming logic. This approach builds essential skills in how Python programs communicate with AI models, preparing you to tackle the added complexity of autonomous planning, tool use, and action-taking in AI agents.
By building your own AI assistant, you will learn the input-process-output flow, how Python programs interface with AI models, and the foundational concepts needed for advanced AI agents. You will also clearly recognize the difference between an assistant’s role (delivering information) and an agent’s role (taking autonomous action).
