APIs are like waiters in a restaurant: they let your program order from an AI model without needing to see the kitchen. By the end of this session, you'll have built your own AI assistant that runs from the command line, capable of answering any question you ask. This approach aligns perfectly with a Build-First Philosophy that prioritizes hands-on learning over prolonged setup.
How an API Works: The Restaurant Analogy
- You (your program) call the restaurant and order food (send a request)
- The kitchen (AI model) prepares the food (processes the request)
- The waiter (API) brings the result back to you
- You never need to know what happens inside the kitchen, you just use it
Your Day One Goal: Build an AI Assistant
By the end of today, you'll have a command-line AI assistant that:
- Responds to greetings like "Hello" with "Hello, how can I help you today?"
- Answers any question you ask, such as "Explain Python in simple words"
- Can provide code examples on request, e.g., "Write a program to print numbers from 1 to 10"
- Runs entirely on your own computer or laptop
This hands-on project is an ideal starting point for a A Step-by-Step Roadmap to Mastering AI: From Beginner to Confident User, where you'll move from simple command-line interactions to more advanced applications.
Build-First Philosophy
This course follows a simple approach: build first, learn while building. You won't be overwhelmed with dozens of installations, only what's needed for today's task. Once you've mastered this, exploring Top AI Tools to Boost Productivity and Transform Business Operations can help you see how these same principles apply to powerful, no-code platforms like Build AI Agents with Microsoft Copilot Studio – No Code Guide.
Now, we will try to understand a very important concept, which is called API. Application program interface.
So, imagine you call a restaurant and you don't enter the kitchen. What you do? You
order it. You order the food. So, instead you place an order, the kitchen prepares the food and the waiter brings
it back to you. So, you don't know what is happening inside the kitchen. What you have done, you have just ordered the
food and the waiter gives back you the food. API works in a very similar way.
Your Python program sends a request. So, your Python program sends a request
to the AI model. AI model processes it and the result is returned to your program.
So, you don't need to know how the AI model works internally. You simply use it. This is
why API are very powerful. So, by the end of today, that means the day one, you will have built your own AI
assistant that you can run from the command line. So, it will look something like this.
How it will look? That will be your AI assistant. You will ask hello, then AI assistant will reply,
"Hello, how can help you today?" Then you can again ask anything like explain Python in simple words, then
your AI assistant will reply related to that particular question. You can ask any question and it will reply. This is
our task for the day one that we have to make an AI assistant which works in this way. That is the output we are expecting
from our AI assistant. Anything you can ask. For example, you can ask write a program to print numbers
from 1 to 10 and your AI assistant will give you the program. So, you can ask any questions and it will reply the
answer. So, when you see this running on your computer, this will run on your computer
or laptop, you will have built your first AI-powered application. Isn't excellent? Excellent.
Now, we move to the first practical part. Since our philosophy is build first,
learn while building. That is the my philosophy in this course. We would not overwhelm you with dozens of
installations. We will install only what is required today.
Thank you. We will meet in the next session.
An API (Application Programming Interface) is a set of rules that allows different software programs to communicate. In the restaurant analogy, you are your program ordering food, the AI model is the kitchen preparing the data, and the API is the waiter that reliably brings your request to the kitchen and returns the result without you needing to understand the kitchen's inner workings.
Your command-line AI assistant will be able to respond to greetings like 'Hello' with a friendly reply, answer any question you ask (e.g., 'Explain Python in simple words'), and provide code examples on request (e.g., 'Write a program to print numbers from 1 to 10'). It runs entirely on your own computer or laptop.
The build-first philosophy means you start by creating a working AI assistant immediately, learning concepts as you go. This approach avoids overwhelming you with unnecessary installations or theory upfront, instead focusing on hands-on experience that builds confidence and practical skills quickly.
No. The course follows a minimalistic approach—you only need to install what is essential for today's task. This eliminates common frustrations of setup and lets you focus on building and understanding the core API and assistant functionality from the start.
The API acts as an intermediary: your program sends a request (e.g., your question) to the API endpoint, which forwards it to the AI model. The model processes the request and returns a response through the API, which your program then displays. You never interact with the model directly, only through the API.
You will use Python, a beginner-friendly and widely-used programming language. Python's simplicity and rich ecosystem of libraries make it ideal for building command-line applications that interact with APIs, even for complete beginners.
Yes. Since the assistant is powered by a general-purpose AI model accessible via API, it can answer questions on a wide range of topics—science, history, daily life, and more. However, its reliability depends on the AI model's training data, so it may not always be correct for specialized or recent topics.
