[00:01]

I never wanted anything so bad in my

[00:03]

life.

[00:05]

I wanted to prove the world. I wanted to

[00:09]

prove my community that I can be

[00:13]

successful. I can get a degree from the

[00:16]

number one H.B.CU. I can get married and

[00:19]

fall in love.

[00:21]

When I had my miscarriage, I was numb. I

[00:25]

didn't know what to do. I didn't know

[00:26]

who to call.

[00:31]

It was hard

[00:38]

when it came down to getting pregnant

[00:40]

again. It was

[00:42]

it was a fear that lived with me.

[00:48]

So when things start to arise like

[00:50]

issues, I'm like, "Hey, can I convince

[00:53]

what I need to do cuz I'm not trying to

[00:54]

lose this baby. Please help me." And I

[00:57]

was constantly dismissed.

[01:02]

16 weeks I created my perfect birth

[01:04]

plan. I was planning my maternity photo

[01:06]

shoot. It was supposed to be at the

[01:08]

beach and we were going to reveal his

[01:10]

godparents there.

[01:12]

And then one night I just wasn't able to

[01:15]

breathe. And so I was like, I don't want

[01:17]

to go to the hospital I was supposed to

[01:19]

give birth in because they had already

[01:20]

turned me away. So I was already that

[01:22]

was the second time they turned me away.

[01:24]

I had gone there about week 14 of my

[01:27]

pregnancy with the same pains that was

[01:29]

in my ribs and they had already given me

[01:31]

morphine for the night and discharged

[01:33]

me. My blood pressure was 186 over 89.

[01:38]

That day I saw that plan crumble like

[01:41]

really fast. The second he said the baby

[01:43]

needs to come out now. There's no way.

[01:45]

There's I can't do that. He's not big

[01:47]

enough. He wasn't even 2 lb yet. My baby

[01:50]

wasn't home with me for the first 2

[01:52]

months of his life.

[01:55]

you're fine, you're young, you're

[01:57]

active. Like, these are the things that

[01:58]

was said to me. A lot of these moms,

[02:01]

unfortunately,

[02:02]

their pain isn't being acknowledged.

[02:04]

It's being dismissed. Some of these moms

[02:06]

aren't making it home.

[02:09]

>> Black women uh maybe some black women um

[02:14]

are not heard as they ought to be heard

[02:17]

because the listener is not sensitive to

[02:19]

that voice.

[02:21]

>> There was 30 other nurses in the room at

[02:23]

this point. They're preparing me for

[02:24]

birth. So, everyone's in there. The

[02:25]

doctors are in there. Everyone's talking

[02:28]

around me, talking to each other. I

[02:30]

believe it's called like the charge

[02:31]

nurse. She came in, she actually held my

[02:34]

hand, got down to my level, like, I got

[02:36]

you. I won't let anything happen to you.

[02:38]

That was the first time in that entire

[02:40]

hospital stay that I actually felt

[02:42]

supported by the medical staff.

[02:46]

We have some evidence that suggests the

[02:48]

result of the biases are diminishing the

[02:52]

health of African-American women and

[02:54]

likely their their infants. Um, but we

[02:56]

do need to do some more research to

[02:58]

really, you know, tease out exactly in

[03:00]

what situations does this happen and

[03:03]

what may be some things that we can

[03:05]

mediate or remediate that problem.

[03:10]

after delivering my baby. I w up being

[03:13]

um diagnosed with delayed

[03:14]

preeacclampsia. I think it was like 4

[03:16]

days that I was hospitalized from this

[03:18]

and

[03:19]

all this could have been prevented if my

[03:22]

OB/GYN would have listened to me.

[03:27]

Is this what motherhood look like? Cuz

[03:29]

they don't tell me none of this. They

[03:30]

don't tell any of this. They give you

[03:32]

all the bells and the whistles. Oh, oh,

[03:35]

it's so beautiful to have a baby, which

[03:37]

it is. It's beautiful bringing life into

[03:40]

this world, but it's not beautiful when

[03:42]

this world don't support you the way

[03:45]

that you need when you're bringing life

[03:48]

into this world.

[03:50]

So, when I found out that I was pregnant

[03:52]

with a girl, the it shift my mindset

[03:55]

shift because now and I love my boys,

[03:59]

but now I have a mini me. I have a black

[04:03]

woman. I just thought about her becoming

[04:07]

a mother.

[04:11]

I wanted to create a space and a

[04:13]

platform that can actually keep record

[04:17]

of these stories. So, not only our

[04:21]

generation can listen and engage with

[04:24]

this, the generations that are coming

[04:25]

after us.

[04:27]

It taught me to advocate for myself and

[04:30]

that I would not I could have prevented

[04:32]

a lot if I spoke up for myself. And so I

[04:35]

became a doula to prepare myself for my

[04:38]

next baby but also be there for the

[04:41]

numerous of women who can't speak up for

[04:43]

themselves who may be scared to speak up

[04:45]

for themselves. I go there to make them

[04:47]

feel safe and supported and that this is

[04:49]

their day their journey and if they need

[04:52]

someone to speak up for them I will be

[04:54]

that person. We have been raised, it has

[04:57]

been ingrained in us to keep other folks

[05:00]

out your business. So we end up

[05:02]

suffering in silence. And with anything

[05:05]

that you hold down layer upon layer upon

[05:08]

layer, eventually it explodes.

[05:11]

>> Many pregnancies are different from one

[05:13]

to the other. But if you're if you um

[05:16]

want to soldier on and and and suffer in

[05:19]

silence, that may cost you your life and

[05:21]

the life of your baby. As hard as it is

[05:23]

to hear, no one can help you if they

[05:26]

don't know. When we tell our stories, we

[05:29]

can create actual change.

[05:32]

I didn't want to tell my pain because I

[05:35]

was embarrassed. You don't have to look

[05:38]

at it that way. You have a voice. Don't

[05:41]

silence it because your story can help

[05:44]

somebody else.
