[00:00]

okay let's talk about how World War I

[00:01]

was fought and that means things are

[00:02]

going to get real trenchy and real stal

[00:04]

so if you're ready to get them bran

[00:05]

Cal's milked Total War style then let's

[00:08]

get to it so the first thing you have to

[00:09]

know about the fighting of World War I

[00:10]

is that this is the world's first Total

[00:12]

War and by definition that's a war which

[00:14]

requires the mobilization of a country's

[00:16]

entire population both military and

[00:18]

civilian in order to fight it that's

[00:19]

kind of a big deal because in the past

[00:21]

there was a pretty clear line between

[00:22]

what soldiers were doing out in the

[00:24]

battlefield and what civilians were

[00:25]

doing back home but in Total War every

[00:27]

last Schmo in the country is required to

[00:29]

contribute in some way to the war effort

[00:31]

and to make things more devastating in a

[00:33]

total war even civilians were considered

[00:35]

viable targets for military efforts oh

[00:37]

and by the way if you want no guys to

[00:38]

follow along with this video on all my

[00:39]

videos and check that link in the

[00:40]

description anyway as you may have

[00:41]

guessed waging a total war is not easy

[00:43]

so you're going to need to understand

[00:45]

that governments use various strategies

[00:46]

to keep morale up among the troops in

[00:48]

the battlefield and civilians back home

[00:50]

and the chief strategy that you need to

[00:51]

know is that governments used all kinds

[00:52]

of propaganda to motivate everyone to

[00:55]

keep making the necessary sacrifices and

[00:57]

these propaganda campaigns demonized

[00:58]

enemies and often exag rated the

[01:00]

atrocities that the enemies were

[01:01]

committing so the goal was to remind

[01:03]

everyone involved in the war that their

[01:04]

own cause amounted to a righteous

[01:06]

struggle against evil forces and

[01:07]

therefore whatever sacrifice was

[01:09]

demanded was worth it I mean look at

[01:11]

this guy he's going to insult your

[01:12]

mother eat your children and then

[01:13]

deliberately hurt your feelings and so

[01:15]

for all the States involved in World War

[01:16]

I they went Bonkers producing this kind

[01:18]

of material in the form of Art and

[01:20]

various media including news reals and

[01:21]

posters and pamphlets now one aspect of

[01:23]

these propaganda campaigns that you

[01:25]

really need to remember is that they

[01:26]

used intensified forms of nationalism in

[01:28]

order to get their messages across from

[01:30]

the last video that nationalism was a

[01:31]

big cause of this war people in various

[01:33]

states began to view the world as kind

[01:34]

of like a collection of enemy Rivals and

[01:36]

that their National identities were the

[01:38]

most important thing about them so much

[01:40]

of this propaganda capitalized on these

[01:41]

nationalist sentiments in order to

[01:43]

generate fear of foreign enemies and

[01:45]

pride in a nation's own people okay now

[01:46]

let's turn the corner and talk about the

[01:47]

general trends that describe how World

[01:49]

War I was fought and look I could talk

[01:51]

all day about Germany's schlein plan or

[01:53]

the various battles that get military

[01:54]

historians all tingly but you really

[01:56]

only need to know one basic fact and a

[01:58]

few ways to illustrate it and that fact

[01:59]

is is this new military Technologies

[02:01]

made World War I one of the deadliest

[02:03]

Wars in human history now some of those

[02:05]

Technologies included machine guns and

[02:06]

chemical gas and tanks just to name a

[02:08]

few but it wasn't just technology that

[02:09]

made this war deadly it was also the

[02:11]

nature of how they were used and here's

[02:13]

where I tell you about the main feature

[02:14]

of fighting namely trench warfare now to

[02:16]

understand this let me give you a little

[02:17]

context in the beginning of the war

[02:19]

generals consulted the past for winning

[02:21]

strategies and found that Victory always

[02:22]

went to the first mover and those who

[02:24]

leveraged the most spirited attacks

[02:26]

therefore French and British armies

[02:27]

charged across the field to fight

[02:29]

Germans but they were were met with

[02:30]

thousands of rounds of machine gun fire

[02:32]

which led to massive casualties so it

[02:34]

wasn't long before generals on both

[02:35]

sides changed tactics to avoid such

[02:37]

bloody encounters and that tactic is

[02:39]

what we call trench warfare in which

[02:40]

each side dug miles of trenches opposite

[02:43]

each other and hunkered down for

[02:44]

protection now to be clear trench

[02:45]

warfare was not a new strategy invented

[02:47]

for this war but the scale of it

[02:49]

outstripped anything that came before

[02:50]

and it was precisely fighting From The

[02:52]

Trenches that caused so many casualties

[02:54]

in World War I each side hid in their

[02:56]

trenches which were fortified with

[02:57]

machine guns and barbed wire and if one

[02:59]

side came out of their trenches and

[03:00]

charge they will be mowed down by

[03:02]

machine guns or otherwise caught in the

[03:03]

barbed wire and the same with the other

[03:05]

side therefore this situation led to

[03:06]

years of stalemates where casualties

[03:08]

mounted but neither side made much

[03:10]

progress and so what everyone believed

[03:11]

would be a quick War turned into a

[03:13]

yearslong effort and with so many men

[03:15]

dying on the field that's when this war

[03:16]

became truly Global in scope remember

[03:18]

that the states fighting this war like

[03:20]

Great Britain and France and Germany had

[03:21]

spent a great deal of effort over the

[03:23]

course of the last period building up

[03:24]

massive Colonial empir so what's an

[03:26]

imperial state to do when all of its own

[03:28]

men are dying on the battlefield you

[03:30]

call up colonial troops to fight your

[03:31]

war and so these various Imperial Powers

[03:33]

muster troops from Africa India China

[03:35]

southeast Asia Australia Canada New

[03:37]

Zealand and many more Colonial men were

[03:39]

conscripted as Porters in the war whose

[03:41]

job it was to carry military equipment

[03:42]

to various locations and look you don't

[03:44]

have to be a historical genius to

[03:45]

understand that Colonial people who had

[03:47]

been dominated and exploited by their

[03:48]

Imperial overlords weren't that uh

[03:50]

excited to go fight this war that had

[03:52]

nothing to do with them and yet they did

[03:54]

it in hopes that such sacrifices would

[03:56]

help them gain independence or at least

[03:57]

a greater degree of self-rule after the

[03:59]

war and maybe it won't surprise you by

[04:01]

now but that didn't really work out and

[04:02]

it's going to cause all kinds of

[04:04]

problems for Imperial Powers but we'll

[04:05]

save that for another video anyway the

[04:07]

war dragged on for four years and left

[04:08]

an awful lot of Destruction in its way

[04:10]

but a key turning point was the entry of

[04:12]

the United States on the side of the

[04:13]

Allied Powers namely Britain and France

[04:15]

in 1917 now initially when the war broke

[04:17]

out the US wanted to remain neutral but

[04:19]

Germany had a habit of sinking ships

[04:20]

with Americans on them and got sassy

[04:22]

enough to try to incite Mexico to start

[04:24]

a war with the US to keep them otherwise

[04:26]

occupied and all those factors

[04:27]

eventually drag the us into the war and

[04:28]

with the fresh of troops backed by the

[04:30]

might of American industry the tide

[04:32]

turned against Germany and the Central

[04:33]

Powers so the war officially ended in

[04:35]

1918 with the signing of the Treaty of

[04:37]

Versa Germany and the Central Powers had

[04:39]

lost while the Allied Powers had won

[04:40]

despite American President woodro

[04:42]

Wilson's attempts to forge peace without

[04:44]

victory among the belligerent of the war

[04:45]

France and Britain used the treaty to

[04:47]

punish Germany which would play a major

[04:49]

role in the causes of World War II but

[04:50]

again that's a story for another video
