The sick role refers to the set of behaviors and expectations assigned to individuals who are experiencing physical or mental illness or injury. It is a concept studied in health psychology to understand how people respond to illness and how their behavior changes. Key Responsibilities of the Sick Individual
- Seeking Healthcare: Visiting hospitals or healthcare providers to obtain necessary treatment.
- Following Medical Advice: Taking prescribed medication and adhering to doctor's instructions diligently.
- Rest and Nutrition: Ensuring adequate rest and proper nutrition to facilitate recovery.
- Striving for Health: Actively attempting to recover and return to healthy living rather than remaining in a prolonged state of illness.
Roles of Family, Friends, and Society
Loved ones and the community play a crucial role in supporting the sick individual:
- Encouragement: Motivating the sick person to seek medical care and adhere to treatment.
- Assistance: Helping with daily tasks the individual cannot perform, such as cooking and transportation.
- Relief from Duties: Excusing the sick person from work or other responsibilities to allow adequate rest.

Hi guys, this is Do and this is health psychology and we are talking about sick role today. What is sick ro? This refers
to the behavior expected from anybody that is having physical or mental uh illness or even injured. Right? you are
a psychology or as a psychology students no matter the behavior you are interested in it health behavior we are
interested in it and that's why we are studying health psychology why is somebody lying on the bed and the other
one is sitting up why is the other one right so sro as a behavior as we said is um referring
to the behavior expected from any individual that is injured or having mental illness illness or bodily
illness, physical illness I say right they are those responsibilities taken by individuals
right those responsibility or that type of behavior taken on by individual that we or perceive to or say have physical
illness or bodily illness or or mental illness or they are injured right they are responsibilities like we said or
behaviors if I should use that word these affects the way the family, the society or community view them or
respond to them. Yes. To those person individuals who are sick have several roles to play. Not only lying on the bed
that is sick role. You know we are not interested in majorly sick behavior. Now right this if you can please walk me you
understand that we are not looking at sick behavior. We are looking at sick role. Right? Sro is Sick behavior is
that moment of feeling those um liturggic and situation of illness and everything right responding to the
illness but the way we respond to those illnesses is what we call the sick robe. There are expectations there are
behaviors expected of you and not only of you but of significant others around you and even the society. There are
roles expected to be um executed towards a sick person and that is what we are looking at today. They are responsibles
responsibilities or roles expected one role or the other expected and those roles expected from a sick person
includes first visit the hospital to obtain health care. Yes, you visit the hospital
to obtain health care. Health services. Yes. Towards that individual, yes, for your recovery, right? That is one. If
you can't take yourself, you'll be taken all of those things. And the end is first to visit those healthcare, right?
The individual has uh in fact there is no role to play rather than taking the responsibility
to recover. The the sick person should take the drugs as recommended by the doctor
adequately. Have a nice sleep, eat adequately. Yes. Adequate rest, adequate feeding, and it
will help you to recover as soon as possible. Yes. The individual's major role expected is to strive for healthy
living. Yes. and not to remain there or subjected to that e situation. Right? Again
the person do not live alone or most times when the person is not living alone there are um responsibilities
that the friends or other family members are expected such as the parents they have roles to play right and the
these roles include uh taking the person or encouraging the person to go to the hospital or those medical health health
care right and not only that encourage encourage them to take those drugs. Yes. And these friends and loved ones,
significant others take on the other shots that the person would have engaged on other basis when the person is
healthy. So they excuse the person from any daily show or responsibility. So help them to perform that so that they
would rest enough and move towards um recovery. Right. These ones are respected to cook for these sick ones
and help him or her to go to anywhere right in order to restore the person's health to optimal level. Yes. So it's
very important we look at that and it's one of the topics we'll be looking at to see an exam and as we've said roles
exist and they are responsibilities and behavior expected from a sick person. It's as simple as that and
responsibilities and expectations expected from the loved ones of a sick person. That is what we consider when we
are looking at sick role. So, thank you and see you in the next video that when we'll be looking at some health
insurance models. Thank you and I'll see you there.
The sick role is a set of social behaviors and expectations assigned to individuals who are experiencing illness or injury. It helps explain how people respond to being sick, including their responsibilities like seeking treatment and striving to recover. Understanding the sick role is important in health psychology as it reveals how social dynamics influence health behaviors and patient care.
When in the sick role, individuals are expected to seek healthcare by visiting providers, follow medical advice such as taking prescribed medication, ensure adequate rest and proper nutrition, and actively attempt to recover rather than remain ill. These responsibilities help facilitate effective treatment and a timely return to health.
Loved ones and the community support the sick individual by encouraging them to seek and adhere to medical care, assisting with daily tasks they cannot perform like cooking or transportation, and relieving them from work or other duties to allow sufficient rest. This social support is crucial for recovery and maintaining the sick role effectively.
Sick behavior refers to the immediate, personal responses and feelings experienced during illness, such as pain or fatigue. In contrast, the sick role encompasses the socially expected behaviors and responsibilities of the ill person and their support systems, including seeking treatment and temporarily excusing them from normal duties. The sick role frames illness within a social context.
By recognizing the expectations and responsibilities associated with the sick role, healthcare providers can better support patients' recovery processes. This includes encouraging adherence to treatment, involving family support, and addressing social factors that influence illness behavior. Integrating this understanding leads to more comprehensive and effective patient care.
The sick role ties into broader health psychology themes by illustrating how social expectations impact illness behaviors, which interact with psychological factors like stress and attachment. For example, support from caregivers can influence stress levels and recovery outcomes. Understanding this interconnectedness helps in creating holistic approaches to health and wellness.
The sick role may affect how individuals utilize health insurance and healthcare services by shaping their expectations about seeking care and adhering to treatment. Different insurance models might impact access and motivation to fulfill sick role responsibilities, thus influencing recovery. Exploring this connection can inform policies that promote effective healthcare behaviors.
