What Are Health Beliefs?
Health beliefs refer to an individual's thoughts, concerns, and perceptions about their health, including what causes illness, how to maintain health, and ways to prevent sickness. These beliefs influence health behaviors, which are habitual actions related to maintaining or impacting health. For more insight into how stress affects behavior and health, consider reading Comprehensive Understanding of Stress in Health Psychology.
The Role of Health Beliefs in Behavior
Health beliefs shape how people respond to sickness and whether they comply with health advice or medical treatments. When beliefs align with health professionals' recommendations, compliance tends to be higher, leading to better health outcomes. Misaligned beliefs can hinder effective health behaviors. Understanding the expectations of illness and treatment roles can further aid this comprehension, as detailed in Understanding Sick Role: Responsibilities and Expectations in Illness.
Types of Health Beliefs and Their Impact
- Positive Health Beliefs: Encourage behaviors that improve health, such as consuming nutritious foods, exercising regularly, staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep, and resting appropriately.
- Negative Health Beliefs: Lead to harmful behaviors like smoking to feel assertive or warm, drinking alcohol to combat shyness or anxiety, self-medicating without prescriptions, or starving oneself to lose weight.
- Harmless Health Beliefs: Neither positively nor negatively affect health significantly, such as believing that eating regularly prevents all illnesses or waking up at night to drink water without clear health impact.
Examples of Positive Health Behaviors
- Eating bases (healthy staple foods) for better health.
- Engaging in physical exercises to maintain fitness.
- Drinking sufficient water to sustain hydration and homeostasis.
- Sleeping well to ensure productivity and optimal functioning.
- Recognizing when to rest, understanding the body's limits.
Challenges with Negative Health Beliefs
Negative beliefs can lead to risky or ineffective practices that may worsen health. For example, smoking as a means to stay warm or drinking to reduce anxiety may provide temporary relief but cause long-term harm. Self-medication without proper diagnosis can delay effective treatment.
Importance of Aligning Beliefs with Medical Advice
Effective communication between patients and health professionals is crucial. When beliefs contrast with medical guidance, patients may resist necessary treatments. Educating and addressing misconceptions can improve health outcomes and compliance. Hello guys, you're welcome. And today we are going to be talking about an important topic. We call it health
belief. What is hell belief? Health belief refers to um your concern, your belief, your thoughts
about your health. Yes. Uh may as a final year student, you may want to revert and acquaint yourself with the
mean of health. Yeah. According to WH1948, we know it has to do with your biological,
psychological, social and yes, spiritual well-being, right? Yeah. W 1948, right? So now what is health belief? This just
have to do with your your your conceptions about your health. What caused this illness? What made me
healthy? And what made me sick? What caused it? Yes. How is the best way I must tackle this illness?
What to do to prevent it? So, health belief behaviors are those behaviors and habitual patterns of um behaving or
action yet that is related to health. Whatever you do that affect your health is health's behavior. And as you know
that health belief has a role to play in that respect. Yes. So whatever you act or however your behavior is linking to
your behavior or to your health is called health behavior. So and our belief has like I said a role to play in
that. So both in the maintenance, both in the restoration or improvement of your health, we have core beliefs
right that influence how we respond to or comply to health behaviors. There are several beliefs, health beliefs. So
those beliefs that influence the way we respond to sickness, respond to our health or respond to or comply to um
those health behaviors, health related behavior. When we say health related behavior, anything that
can improve or endanger or whatsoever, I don't know, but anything that related to your head, those behavior, our beliefs
has um a role to play in that. So some people hold beliefs that could uh result to positive behavior or positive
health. Sorry. Some can beliefs hold belief that can lead to maybe it could be harmless though and some can hold
belief that can lead to negative health health. Right? And the ones that can lead to positive health uh or good
health is one called posit um positive beliefs or positive behavior and then that of negative is negative
beliefs and that of um harmless situations are called harmless belief um health beliefs. Yes. So so as we know
we you know as psychologists we consider whe These beliefs are in tandem with what the professionals health
professionals say. Yes. So because we understand that communication become difficult if these beliefs are not in
line with what the doctor says right when they are telling you this thing is killing you and you feel ah this is the
only way I can keep awake or this is the only way I can be alert. This is the only way I can be alert at work. Right?
and you are saying something. So this is your belief. So and not in line with the health
providers, it will affect your compliance. For example, uh again people believe that smoking makes them
feel assertive and warms their body and keep them away from cold. Some believe that exercise keeps them healthy and
some believe that when they starve or eat little they wouldn't grow fat and everything. Right? So these are
sometimes very unarticulated. Yes, very unarticulated. And there are mental instructions and mental
structures, archetypes that can influence your your health conditions or your health behavior. Yes. So, so like
we said, positive beliefs are the behavioral actions that have um positive outcomes.
Yes. To your biological, psychological um wellbe those beliefs. Yes. So the other way around negative has a bad
consequence while the harmless has nothing to impact right as much as they may not be true or complying to the
medical services. Yes, it may still not be harmful today. Example of positive beliefs include when you believe when
you eat bases you'll be healthy. That is a a positive health belief. Engaging in physical exercises to keep body fit.
That is a good one. Drinking a lot of water to maintain homeostasis. Yes. And enough hydration and everything. That is
a a positive healthy live. We have sleeping well at night to have a productive day. If you believe if I
sleep well, I will be very active and optimal, function very well the next day. That is a positive health belief.
Resting the body and the mind when needed, right? It's very important. Let me add one, right? Like in this one you
say body firewood, right? Okay. That is a positive health belief. So when you understand when to rest your body
because it's not firewood. Yeah, that's a positive health belief. Then another way around negative health beliefs
includes example smoking to feel uh assertive or warm your body, right? Or smoking. Okay.
Drinking to remove elevate shyness. Drinking to uh present uh uh do presentation in your class to so that
you will not feel the anxiety. Yes. and then all of those then taking drugs without prescription because you felt oh
this is a symptom of malaria this symptom of hyper this is the same symptom okay and the last time I took it
so when you take them at that over the counter drug all those over the counter drug that can find at the chemist
because you feel this is the same symptom right that is also a negative health um belief leading to a negative
health behavior leading to a very um detrimental uh effect on your health right so when you are starving yourself
because you want to have a good body shape that is a problem right I wouldn't want to discuss why is a problem here
but it's a negative health belief but if you want to understand how to lose weight how to maintain a very good body
shape still eating very well and adequately please hit the like button first after subscribing and I'll see you
in the comment box. I'll be wanting to I'll be glad to see your questions there or um seeing that you want to u
understand that I will be willing to um indulge you in that. So then we conclude with the harmless beliefs. Some of the
harmless beliefs include when you are you want to eat regularly. You want to believe that if you eat continuously or
regularly, you will avert illnesses or sickness. Or when you wake up in the night to drink water, oh well,
it's not going to have any medical or health, positive health, anything, no negative one, but still not doing
nothing, right? So these things influence how you react. Yes. Or think towards um any or your health. So,
thank you for having me. Um, you may want to rever to see other videos we have in our channel and we'll be glad to
have your questions and please reach out to me if there's any um question at 07032261791

Health beliefs are your personal thoughts and perceptions about health, including what causes illness and how to prevent it. These beliefs guide your daily actions related to health, such as exercising or seeking medical care. If your beliefs support healthy habits, you're more likely to engage in behaviors that improve well-being.
Positive health beliefs encourage you to adopt habits like eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. These behaviors promote overall health and can prevent illness. For example, drinking sufficient water helps maintain body balance, while regular exercise improves fitness and energy levels.
Negative health beliefs might include thinking smoking helps you feel warm or drinking alcohol reduces anxiety. Such beliefs can lead to harmful behaviors that cause long-term health problems despite temporary relief. Self-medicating without professional advice can also delay proper treatment and worsen health outcomes.
Aligning your beliefs with medical guidance improves your likelihood of following treatments and recommendations accurately, which supports better health outcomes. Misconceptions can cause resistance to effective therapies. Engaging in open communication with healthcare providers helps clarify doubts and correct false beliefs.
Harmless health beliefs don't significantly affect your health positively or negatively, such as believing drinking water at night prevents all sickness. However, being aware of these beliefs helps avoid complacency and ensures you don't overlook necessary health behaviors or professional advice.
Start by reflecting on your thoughts about health and assessing if they align with scientific evidence or medical advice. Educating yourself through reliable sources and consulting healthcare professionals can help correct misconceptions. Adopting accurate beliefs encourages healthier behaviors and better management of your well-being.
