[00:11]

Are you ready to learn some real life

[00:14]

English with comprehensible input? Well,

[00:17]

good, because today you are going to

[00:20]

continue improving your English by

[00:22]

listening to me while I show you the

[00:26]

America that you will not see in the

[00:28]

movies. Today, we are exploring an

[00:31]

abandoned neighborhood. So, the word

[00:34]

abandoned means that people used to live

[00:37]

here and they left. And a neighborhood

[00:39]

is a place where there's a lot of

[00:40]

houses, where people are raising their

[00:43]

families, where people live. This

[00:45]

neighborhood was once home to a lot of

[00:48]

American families just trying to live

[00:51]

the American dream. But today, we are

[00:54]

going to show you what happens when the

[00:56]

American dream turns into this.

[01:02]

>> So guys, it's it's really kind of sad to

[01:05]

see a neighborhood in this state because

[01:08]

every house here was once somebody's

[01:11]

dream. The dream of raising their

[01:13]

family. the dream of giving their

[01:15]

children opportunities that they didn't

[01:17]

have. And now you can see what's become

[01:20]

of it. Now, why is there a whole

[01:23]

neighborhood just abandoned when we have

[01:26]

a housing crisis in the United States?

[01:29]

Stick around because we're going to find

[01:30]

the answer to that a little bit later.

[01:33]

Guys, it feels kind of creepy to be

[01:36]

here. It feels so strange to be in a

[01:39]

neighborhood with nobody around. And I

[01:42]

know that it's just us here because when

[01:44]

we got here, we saw a deer running away.

[01:48]

That I've learned in all of my years of

[01:51]

hiking, that means that you're the first

[01:53]

one there that day because if somebody

[01:55]

else was there, the deer would have ran

[01:57]

away already. And you guys, you could

[01:59]

just see that nature is starting to take

[02:02]

this place back. There's trees and

[02:05]

plants growing in the house. The house

[02:07]

is starting to fall apart. Maybe in a

[02:09]

hundred years there'll be trees right

[02:11]

there and you won't even know there was

[02:13]

ever a house there. Let's see what else

[02:15]

there is. Guys, I just want to show you

[02:17]

this street right here. Okay, this

[02:20]

street. This street was once the kind of

[02:23]

street that you see in any neighborhood

[02:25]

where you could drive your car safely.

[02:28]

And now it's been so long since

[02:30]

anybody's been here that there's plants

[02:33]

growing up out of the street. Wow. It it

[02:37]

really makes you think, what happened

[02:39]

here? Why is there nobody here? Why

[02:42]

doesn't the city government take care of

[02:45]

this place? Why are they letting this

[02:47]

land go to waste when people need homes?

[02:50]

Camera wife, have you ever seen the

[02:52]

movie I Am Legend?

[02:53]

>> No.

[02:54]

>> So, it's a very famous actor, Will

[02:56]

Smith. You guys probably know about Will

[02:58]

Smith because he smacked somebody a

[03:01]

couple years ago.

[03:02]

>> Oh, yes.

[03:03]

>> Yeah. The whole world hates Will Smith

[03:06]

now.

[03:06]

>> He's so famous.

[03:07]

>> He's a joke now, but back then he was

[03:10]

one of our most beloved actors. I'm a

[03:12]

fan of his acting. I think he's a joke,

[03:14]

but I like his movies. Anyway, he made a

[03:17]

movie called I Am Legend where he's the

[03:20]

last man alive. That's what you feel

[03:22]

like when you're walking down this

[03:24]

street. Like you're the last person

[03:26]

alive. All you can hear is the animals.

[03:36]

Here we have another house. And you

[03:38]

could see every house here, guys. Has

[03:41]

the windows broken out. Wow. And this at

[03:44]

one time, guys, was actually a beautiful

[03:47]

little home. A place you could have been

[03:49]

proud to raise your family. When you're

[03:51]

in a place like this, you should hear

[03:52]

happy children playing, but now you

[03:55]

can't hear anything.

[04:07]

Now guys, a cliche is something that

[04:11]

people say very often. Okay? A cliche is

[04:14]

something that people have said so many

[04:16]

times that it sounds old and it's played

[04:20]

out. But a cliche about the American

[04:23]

dream is that you'll have a home with a

[04:26]

yard and a little white fence. Well,

[04:29]

this was some family's little white

[04:31]

fence. Maybe they had a garden here.

[04:34]

Maybe somebody grew delicious tomatoes

[04:36]

or beautiful flowers. But now you can

[04:39]

see, like I said, nature is taking all

[04:42]

of this back. The little fence has

[04:44]

fallen. Now it's more like a nightmare.

[04:47]

So guys, this kind of house really is

[04:50]

the American dream. You've got a a home

[04:52]

that's probably two or three bedrooms.

[04:54]

Got a nice yard with a garden. You've

[04:57]

got a garage. But now look at it. The

[05:00]

door is sitting out back here. Garbage

[05:03]

everywhere. Completely destroyed. Let's

[05:05]

see what this garage looks like.

[05:09]

Here you can see what used to be a grill

[05:11]

on the ground, guys. Somebody probably

[05:14]

had barbecues over here cooking

[05:16]

delicious food, inviting their family

[05:19]

over to see their home that they were so

[05:21]

proud of. Now you can see what it looks

[05:23]

like. Here's the garage. You can imagine

[05:26]

somebody's father out here working on

[05:28]

his little projects, trying to get some

[05:30]

alone time. And there's even workbenches

[05:33]

over here, so you know that somebody was

[05:35]

doing some sort of work in here.

[05:39]

Here's

[05:44]

an old arcade game. So, this garage was

[05:48]

probably once some guy's man cave. So,

[05:51]

guys, you could see that when this house

[05:54]

was taken care of, it actually was a

[05:57]

beautiful home. These were nice and

[05:59]

painted white. Everything was clean. You

[06:01]

can see over here, they did really did

[06:04]

have their white fence. And now that

[06:06]

dream is just sinking back into the

[06:09]

earth.

[06:13]

Here guys, you can see what we call a

[06:15]

street lamp. So what a street lamp does,

[06:18]

you guys know, is when the sun goes

[06:21]

down, the light comes on so people could

[06:24]

see while they're coming home. You could

[06:26]

see the electrical cable here is just

[06:28]

down sitting on the ground. So this

[06:31]

really was a real neighborhood, guys. It

[06:34]

had a nice street, electricity, lights,

[06:37]

and now every house has its windows

[06:40]

smashed out, and there's nobody around

[06:43]

except for us.

[06:45]

So, once again, guys, this house, if it

[06:49]

was fixed up, this would be a $230,000

[06:53]

house in the United States. This is

[06:55]

probably a three-bedroom house. It's

[06:57]

made out of brick. And now you can just

[06:59]

see that the bricks are falling out. If

[07:02]

you guys don't know, this material is

[07:04]

called bricks. And this here was once a

[07:07]

sidewalk. The sidewalk is where you walk

[07:11]

up to the house. Not really a sidewalk

[07:13]

anymore, though.

[07:15]

I think you guys are probably wondering

[07:18]

what's it look like inside. Should we

[07:19]

find out?

[07:27]

Let me look around for a second first.

[07:29]

Okay.

[07:36]

All right, guys. Let's see. Be very

[07:39]

careful because the floor, you can feel

[07:42]

it. It's not strong. And you can see

[07:44]

here that the floor is raising up. That

[07:46]

means that moisture has been eating it

[07:48]

up and it's not very strong. Do you want

[07:51]

me to show them? Okay, guys. This was

[07:53]

the living room. This house even had a

[07:55]

fireplace. This floor is not sturdy.

[07:58]

This used to be the kitchen. You could

[08:00]

see it even had nice lights. Wow. Stay

[08:02]

right there, baby. Here's what used to

[08:04]

be the bathroom. Once again, nice

[08:06]

lights. This was a nice house, guys. One

[08:08]

bedroom, two bedrooms. This was a

[08:11]

threebedroom house. There's my wife

[08:14]

about to fall through the floor. Be

[08:16]

careful, baby. And maybe somebody used

[08:18]

to sit out on this porch. Hey guys, I

[08:21]

hope that you are enjoying this video as

[08:24]

much as I enjoyed making it. Real quick,

[08:27]

I want to tell you guys about a super

[08:29]

cool way that you can practice your

[08:31]

speaking in English. So, the English

[08:34]

learning platform Sprout has a really

[08:37]

cool new feature, Kyle AI. So, on

[08:41]

Sprout, you can watch videos that are

[08:43]

made specifically at your level of

[08:45]

English, and afterwards, you can discuss

[08:47]

that video with Kyle AI. So, let's see

[08:51]

how it works. Let's say, for example,

[08:53]

you just watched the collaboration that

[08:55]

Jay and I made where we talked about

[08:58]

very deep topics. Okay, let's see what

[09:01]

it's like to talk with Kyle AI about

[09:03]

that.

[09:04]

>> Hello, Kyle. It's nice to chat with you.

[09:06]

In the video, Jay and I talked about

[09:08]

what makes life meaningful. What do you

[09:11]

think gives life meaning? I think that

[09:13]

finding your purpose, finding the thing

[09:16]

that truly makes you feel alive and then

[09:19]

dedicating yourself to be the best that

[09:22]

you can possibly be at it is what gives

[09:25]

life meaning. What do you think about

[09:26]

that?

[09:27]

>> That's a really interesting thought. It

[09:29]

sounds like you're saying that having a

[09:31]

purpose and striving for

[09:33]

self-improvement are key. I agree that

[09:35]

working towards something you're

[09:37]

passionate about can make life feel very

[09:39]

meaningful. Did Jay and I mention

[09:41]

anything in the video that reminded you

[09:43]

of your idea?

[09:44]

>> Wow, guys. Not only does that sound like

[09:47]

my voice, that sounds like something

[09:49]

that I would say. So, my friends, if you

[09:52]

want to try out Sprout and speak with

[09:55]

Kyle AI, you can click the link down in

[09:58]

the description, use my promo code,

[10:00]

Pensando, and try it for free for a

[10:03]

week. This is an awesome way that you

[10:06]

guys can improve your speaking and

[10:08]

really help creators like Jay and myself

[10:10]

who are trying our best to bring real

[10:12]

life English to the world. All right,

[10:15]

let's get back to the video. Here's

[10:17]

another house that you can tell was

[10:19]

beautiful at one point. And you could

[10:21]

tell just by that color that the people

[10:23]

who lived here were happy people because

[10:27]

only happy people paint their house that

[10:30]

color, guys. Wow. I'm not even happy

[10:33]

enough to paint my house that color. So,

[10:35]

so who whoever lived here, this was

[10:37]

their home, guys. This was where they

[10:39]

wanted to live a life. And this house

[10:42]

almost looks okay from the outside, but

[10:45]

it is completely destroyed on the

[10:47]

inside.

[10:57]

Now, over here, guys, you can see a very

[10:59]

old mailbox. And each one of those

[11:02]

little spaces is where the mailman would

[11:04]

put the mail for each one of those

[11:06]

houses. But you can see that you can't

[11:09]

even get there anymore. And those other

[11:11]

ones right there, the the blue and the

[11:13]

red one, those are newspaper mailboxes.

[11:16]

So people still read newspapers back

[11:19]

when they lived here. Now we all get our

[11:21]

news from Tik Tok. Another house that

[11:23]

>> Huh.

[11:24]

>> or YouTubers

[11:25]

>> or YouTubers. This house probably is the

[11:28]

one in the best shape, but that does not

[11:30]

mean that it's not destroyed.

[11:50]

All

[12:00]

right, guys. So, you can see that people

[12:01]

have came in here and spray painted all

[12:05]

over the place. This is what we call

[12:07]

graffiti. Wow. This one has carpet,

[12:10]

hardwood floors. Come here, camera wife.

[12:12]

Can you guys picture me in here cooking,

[12:14]

doing a cooking video? Actually has some

[12:16]

pretty good space. This was once a nice

[12:19]

kitchen for sure. Once again, guys,

[12:22]

three-bedroom house at least. We have

[12:24]

people in the United States that can't

[12:27]

afford a home and people living on the

[12:29]

streets. I'm going to make a video about

[12:31]

homelessness here eventually. But how is

[12:35]

a place like this just sitting here when

[12:37]

we have people that need homes? The

[12:39]

government could come in here and

[12:41]

$30,000 later, this place could look

[12:43]

brand new for a new family and a new

[12:45]

chance at the American dream. So guys,

[12:47]

you could see that the paint is falling

[12:49]

off the ceiling. The fan is broken. But

[12:52]

that was actually an expensive fan a

[12:55]

long time ago. And we call these ceiling

[12:57]

fans, guys. That was an expensive

[12:58]

ceiling fan at one point. But now look

[13:01]

at it. Just wasted the nice hardwood

[13:03]

floor. Wow. So guys, this was a four

[13:06]

bedroomedroom house. That's very

[13:09]

expensive here. Four bedroomedroom, two

[13:11]

bathrooms. But you guys got to see this

[13:13]

last bedroom here.

[13:15]

>> Look up here, baby. Look at the paint

[13:17]

just falling from the ceiling, guys.

[13:19]

With the time, it's just slowly fell.

[13:22]

That's paint all over the floor. It's

[13:24]

peeling off the walls. Wow.

[13:29]

>> My wife says it looks like a a

[13:31]

decoration, but it is not. That's just

[13:34]

time. And guys, imagine how long it

[13:37]

takes for paint to do that.

[13:39]

>> Yeah.

[13:39]

>> So, that is how long this place has just

[13:41]

been sitting here exposed to the

[13:43]

weather. Oh, wow. Guys, my wife just

[13:46]

pointed this out. Bird's nest. A bird

[13:48]

has made this their home. At least

[13:50]

somebody's living here. All right, guys.

[13:53]

So, we just had a runin. And a runin

[13:57]

means when you run into somebody, when

[13:58]

you see somebody, the police came out

[14:00]

here, guys. Three officers driving

[14:02]

around in a truck. So, instead of

[14:04]

hiding, I went and talked to them. They

[14:07]

said, "Hey guys, how's it going? Uh, are

[14:09]

we breaking any rules being here?" They

[14:12]

basically said be careful, don't cause

[14:16]

any trouble and you're okay. So that is

[14:20]

uh one thing that has always served me

[14:22]

well. I treat the police with respect

[14:25]

and they treat me with respect as well.

[14:27]

So it's when you have an attitude with

[14:29]

them that they have an attitude with

[14:30]

you. Anyway, guys, this is one more of

[14:33]

the houses. Wow. Tell me in the

[14:35]

comments, guys, what you think about

[14:37]

seeing all of these homes abandoned.

[14:41]

Nobody here. It's incredible. What do

[14:43]

you think, wife?

[14:44]

>> Sad.

[14:45]

>> Sad. It really is sad because like the

[14:48]

house we were just in, you could see

[14:51]

they had nice uh blinds, the things that

[14:53]

go in front of the curtains, expensive

[14:56]

bathroom things. It was once a very nice

[14:59]

home, and now look at it. An abandoned

[15:01]

neighborhood in abandoned America, which

[15:04]

is what I'll be calling this video. So

[15:06]

guys, why why on earth are there four

[15:11]

bedroomedroom two bath homes sitting

[15:13]

here doing nothing when millions of

[15:16]

Americans need homes? Let's go find out.

[15:18]

wife.

[15:40]

All right, my friends. Here we have our

[15:43]

answer. This is why that neighborhood

[15:47]

and so much of this part of the country

[15:50]

has been abandoned. Why? The steel

[15:52]

mills, guys. These are the steel mills.

[15:55]

And you can see that part over there

[15:56]

where the smoke is coming up. That's a

[15:58]

blast furnace. That means that they're

[16:01]

making steel there. That is the reason

[16:03]

that my family and so many other

[16:06]

families in this part of the country get

[16:09]

to eat, get to have homes.

[16:12]

But I'm one of the lucky ones that still

[16:15]

makes a living off of this. However,

[16:17]

there are thousands of others who lost

[16:20]

their jobs. How did this happen, guys?

[16:22]

Well, over a hundred years ago now, a

[16:25]

huge company called US Steel came here,

[16:29]

built all of this, all of this guys, and

[16:33]

started making so much steel, so much

[16:36]

money that people from all over the

[16:38]

country and even from different

[16:40]

countries moved here to have a career in

[16:43]

the steel industry. Now, US Steel chose

[16:46]

this specific area for a reason. As you

[16:49]

can see, we're on Lake Michigan, so

[16:51]

boats could bring in all of the raw

[16:54]

materials, the supplies, the iron that

[16:57]

they need to feed those blast furnaces

[17:00]

and make that steel. Another reason they

[17:02]

chose right here, as you can see on this

[17:05]

side of the lake, right over there,

[17:07]

guys, is the big city of Chicago. So,

[17:10]

they knew if they chose this area right

[17:12]

here, they would have a place where they

[17:15]

could bring in all the materials on the

[17:17]

lake. tons of workers could come from

[17:20]

Chicago and they built the cities of

[17:22]

Gary, East Chicago, all of these places

[17:25]

around here around the idea that there

[17:28]

were jobs here at the steel mill. And

[17:31]

not just jobs, guys, good jobs. A job

[17:34]

where a person could come work, feed

[17:38]

their family, send their kids to

[17:40]

college, give their families a better

[17:42]

life than they ever dreamed of. These

[17:45]

jobs provided people with good salaries,

[17:47]

provided people with health insurance

[17:49]

for their families, which is a huge

[17:52]

thing, and their union jobs, which

[17:55]

people thought meant that they were

[17:57]

safe. But for many people, they did not

[18:00]

turn out to be safe at all. What changed

[18:02]

from this place being a place that

[18:05]

provided jobs and homes and work to

[18:08]

being a place where people abandoned

[18:11]

entire neighborhoods like we saw

[18:12]

earlier? Well, really two things. One,

[18:16]

technology started to advance and

[18:20]

machines were invented. And the thing

[18:22]

about these machines is now with one guy

[18:25]

running the machine, he can do the work

[18:28]

that used to take 20 people. Okay? So

[18:31]

imagine that if it only takes one person

[18:34]

to run the machine that can do what used

[18:38]

to take 20 people, that means that they

[18:41]

no longer need 19 of the other people.

[18:44]

Okay? So they could get rid of 19 jobs

[18:47]

and just keep the one. Now the thing

[18:49]

about that is with every person who

[18:52]

worked one of those jobs, they have a

[18:54]

family that they were supporting. Okay?

[18:56]

So the machines started to take a lot of

[18:58]

the jobs that used to take many more

[19:01]

people. That's one thing. The second

[19:03]

thing, other countries caught up. Okay.

[19:07]

At first, nobody around the world could

[19:09]

do what we were doing here at US Steel.

[19:13]

But then other countries started making

[19:15]

their own blast furnaces like this. And

[19:18]

not only could they make the same steel

[19:20]

at the same same quality, they could do

[19:23]

it for a lot less money. So a lot of

[19:27]

those jobs started going to China and

[19:29]

India and other places and they started

[19:31]

making less and less and less steel here

[19:34]

in the US. So guys, back when US steel

[19:38]

here was the king of worldwide steel,

[19:41]

there was almost 200,000 people living

[19:44]

in the city of Gary alone. But once the

[19:47]

machines started taking some of the jobs

[19:49]

and then factories in other countries

[19:51]

started taking more of the jobs, now

[19:54]

there's less than 80,000 people living

[19:56]

in the city of Gary. So the population

[19:59]

is less than half of what it was when

[20:03]

these factories were booming and people

[20:05]

were coming here to work. So instead of

[20:08]

people coming to this area to find jobs,

[20:11]

the families who lost their jobs started

[20:14]

to leave. they started to leave and look

[20:17]

for jobs elsewhere. So, one family

[20:21]

leaves one of those homes we saw

[20:22]

earlier, another family leaves. The next

[20:25]

thing you know, since there's nobody

[20:27]

there to take care of the houses, they

[20:29]

start looking worse and worse and

[20:31]

getting more dangerous. And the last

[20:34]

family there doesn't want to live by a

[20:36]

bunch of abandoned homes. So eventually

[20:38]

even the last family there left and now

[20:42]

you have a completely abandoned

[20:44]

neighborhood. Now this is happening not

[20:47]

just in that neighborhood but all around

[20:51]

these industrial parts of the country as

[20:54]

technology changes and jobs are going

[20:57]

from these places to offices and now

[21:00]

offices people are working from home. So

[21:03]

really guys it's changing times. is

[21:06]

changing times. A hundred years ago,

[21:08]

that was the best opportunity that a

[21:11]

person, a young man like me could hope

[21:13]

to give his family. A young man like me

[21:16]

in his 30s would come all the way here

[21:19]

from Tennessee. That's what my

[21:20]

grandparents did, guys. My uh my

[21:23]

mother's father moved up here all the

[21:26]

way from Tennessee just to work in a

[21:29]

place like that and feed his family. So

[21:32]

my friends, that's the story for

[21:34]

thousands of Americans.

[21:36]

They came to this part of the country

[21:39]

looking for that steel mill opportunity,

[21:41]

looking for a great job to put food on

[21:43]

their table. Eventually those jobs went

[21:46]

away as times changed. And now we are

[21:49]

left with an abandoned city full of

[21:52]

crime, drugs, empty houses. So who

[21:56]

knows, maybe one day things will change.

[21:58]

New opportunities will come here to

[22:00]

Gary. But for right now, what we saw was

[22:03]

part of Abandon America. Thank you so

[22:06]

much for being here on this adventure.

[22:08]

Guys, this video was so much fun for my

[22:11]

beautiful camera wife and I to film. And

[22:14]

we want to start making more videos like

[22:16]

this, like mini documentaries, okay?

[22:19]

Showing cool things here in the US and

[22:22]

then explaining why they're like that.

[22:24]

So, if you enjoy this kind of video,

[22:26]

tell me down in the comments, guys.

[22:28]

Appreciate you as always being here,

[22:31]

spending your valuable time with us and

[22:33]

we will see you in the next
