my name is Harvey Jones I studied modern languages at the University of Birmingham I graduated in 2021 and I
currently work as a parliamentary assistant for an MP the Parliamentary assistant role is very varied it is you
know very much all about what the the member that you work for needs on a particular
day um for me it's normally I do a lot of diary management so making sure that if
there are people that want to meet the member of the Member of Parliament or if there are events that we can go to on
specific campaigns um I try and make sure that lots of competing priorities get a chance if we
can um beyond that it's also then writing things like questions to ministers or
writing speeches for the chamber trying to apply for debates of our own so we can raise particular issues that are
relevant to the constituency so there's lots of um I suppose research and writing
involved and it's quite um that in itself brings a lot of variety
to it um because you know one day you can be doing some research on something for
um sustainable air travel and then the next day you're writing about something for
um menopause leave and the day after that you're writing something on Israel Palestine the day after that you're
writing on something about how we can help people with Visa issues and you do have to you know learn where to
find things quite quickly and and um be able to work with you know the team in the constituency that are
dealing with people coming in on a day-to-day basis so it's a lot of research it's a lot of
um emailing people to get more information there's lots of meetings um but it is a really really fun job
because of that because you do do so much um and you do learn a lot of a lot of
different things very very quickly um certainly in in the office where I work you know we we all have a share of
responsibility so we all you know get a chance to write press releases to do things for the chamber so we're all
developing our skills um and you know I do more of one thing and my colleagues do more of other
things but we all do get a chance to try and you know make sure we are developing and we're doing things that will come in
handy for us if we if we leave and go into other things in the future thank you
