[00:00]

I went to the bathroom and I cried and I

[00:02]

looked at myself in the mirror said this

[00:05]

this level of cricket is not for you you

[00:07]

know you're not good enough to do all

[00:09]

this let's introduce the batting Master

[00:14]

of the world siton

[00:19]

tend well let's share a few stories I

[00:22]

reckon um why don't we start right at

[00:25]

the

[00:27]

beginning but School cricket was

[00:29]

exciting

[00:30]

and

[00:32]

uh the reason to start playing cricket

[00:35]

was a strange one I mean I was a

[00:38]

notorious child difficult to

[00:41]

manage and uh I took a lot of pride in

[00:44]

that uh one of the evenings uh they were

[00:48]

showing a famous Bollywood film on on a

[00:52]

TV channel and in those days uh there

[00:55]

were not many channels back home in

[00:58]

India so we friends thought this is this

[01:01]

is the best time to polish off all the

[01:03]

mangoes from the tree which we were not

[01:06]

meant to and we fell down we also

[01:09]

brought the tree down with us and that

[01:11]

was a turning point of my career because

[01:13]

my brother and my family the rest of the

[01:16]

family members

[01:17]

said this is enough and then you're not

[01:20]

allowing more of these complaints to

[01:22]

come home every evening because that was

[01:25]

supposed to be my summer vacations

[01:27]

beginning of my summer vacations and and

[01:30]

uh I said that we we going to make you

[01:33]

burn all your calories on a cricket

[01:34]

field you do what you want you love

[01:36]

Cricket go out and play with a season

[01:39]

ball and that's how my career

[01:42]

started and uh gradually I I did not

[01:45]

know I mean I was only 11 years old I

[01:48]

did not know what were the big

[01:51]

tournaments but but the dream was there

[01:53]

in front of me I wanted to play for

[01:55]

India because as a 10-year-old I had

[01:57]

seen coule Dave lift that beautiful

[02:00]

trophy at Lords 1983 World Cup so I had

[02:05]

also joined the celebrations not knowing

[02:07]

the significance of winning the World

[02:10]

Cup so that's how my Cricket started and

[02:14]

uh I always wanted to win the World Cup

[02:16]

that was the reason I started and as the

[02:19]

time went by I started enjoying cricket

[02:24]

and I started realizing the challenges

[02:26]

of cricket and my coach was instrumental

[02:29]

and along with my brother a to to my

[02:33]

elder brother Ajit to make me

[02:37]

realize the the importance of leading a

[02:41]

disciplined life a focused life and uh

[02:46]

uh to to to to make me push Harder They

[02:51]

found reasons and and even towards the

[02:56]

end of my career I followed that formula

[02:59]

I if I scored runs let the rest of the

[03:02]

world talk about it I think about the

[03:05]

next game and that right from my school

[03:08]

days became an Unwritten formula

[03:11]

Unwritten Law at home that we don't talk

[03:14]

about last game we talk about next game

[03:17]

and however many runs I

[03:20]

scored I wanted to go out and score more

[03:23]

than that so if I didn't score I would

[03:27]

have a restless night if I scored runs I

[03:30]

would still have a restless night

[03:31]

thinking that how am I going to score

[03:33]

more and that's how it all happened I

[03:35]

mean I I I normally don't discuss

[03:37]

numbers but uh this is something that I

[03:39]

must share with all of you I towards the

[03:43]

end of my school Cricket

[03:46]

career I already started playing first

[03:48]

class cricket and uh the last season I

[03:52]

can proudly say that I averaged 1,25

[03:56]

because I only got out once in the whole

[03:58]

season and

[04:04]

my my brother and my coach was

[04:07]

instrumental in that because uh every

[04:11]

time I scored runs none of them said

[04:14]

well played to me and that's why in my

[04:16]

farewell speech I said I said to my

[04:20]

coach that at least now you can take a

[04:22]

chance by saying well done there is

[04:24]

there are no no more matches in my

[04:26]

career but uh something that that lived

[04:30]

for was appreciation from my coach and

[04:33]

my brother which never happened I mean

[04:36]

and that was something which uh you know

[04:38]

sort of kept me giving uh giving my best

[04:42]

all the time and

[04:44]

then a asked around the room and we will

[04:47]

have a chance to ask some questions um

[04:50]

after we have our conversation here um

[04:54]

many people have

[04:55]

said simple easy question what was the

[04:59]

best

[05:00]

Innings ever

[05:03]

uh the one in Perth 1992 I was only 18

[05:07]

then and uh that that was a fast Wicket

[05:13]

everyone I guess each and every o you

[05:15]

know how fast the Wicket is and kind of

[05:18]

Bounce It generates so for for someone

[05:21]

who had never experienced that kind of

[05:24]

pace and bounce and Australia as usual

[05:26]

was playing terrific cricket so so for

[05:31]

for me to go out there and score runs on

[05:33]

that pitch was really important and I

[05:37]

can almost say the turning turning phase

[05:39]

of my career because after that I was

[05:42]

not overc confident but I was confident

[05:45]

to play any attack in the world and I

[05:47]

felt I was ready to face any attack in

[05:50]

the world uh I was able to challenge

[05:54]

many attacks after that in the world but

[05:57]

that one particular inning was was uh

[06:00]

the best inning but the most most

[06:04]

meaningful Innings and something which

[06:08]

which has uh stayed with me now and

[06:10]

it'll stay with me forever has to be the

[06:13]

one that I played against England in

[06:15]

Chennai in

[06:17]

2008 uh there was a time when Mumbai was

[06:21]

hit by that terrible terrorist attack

[06:24]

and uh the the one day series was cancel

[06:30]

England went off to Dubai and uh they

[06:34]

graciously came back to play the test

[06:36]

series and when we turned up in Chennai

[06:38]

to play the first test none of us were

[06:41]

in frame of mind to play test Cricket I

[06:43]

mean any form of cricket because all we

[06:46]

kept discussing was you know how could

[06:48]

this happen to our nation and why did it

[06:52]

happen it was the toughest phase of my

[06:55]

career and I would speak on the behalf

[06:59]

of our team it was really really tough

[07:02]

and for first 3 and a half days we were

[07:05]

completely out of ideas we we could not

[07:10]

put up a competitive

[07:13]

performance and England uh gave us a

[07:16]

Target in the fourth Innings of 375 runs

[07:19]

374 runs we were able to win that game

[07:22]

we chased

[07:24]

375 on a difficult track but to see the

[07:28]

entire nation celebrating that Victory

[07:31]

even for a second meant a lot to all of

[07:34]

us and I had played a significant role

[07:37]

in that so that is the most important

[07:40]

Innings of my life more than even you

[07:43]

know the the other World Cup Innings or

[07:46]

other important Innings that I've been

[07:48]

part of uh this this had a different

[07:51]

meaning all together so CH I

[07:55]

imagine you're right

[08:01]

what about

[08:02]

um some of the

[08:05]

characters that did bow to you I mean

[08:08]

we're talking about the very best fast

[08:10]

Bowlers in the world after the last

[08:11]

quarter of a century why don't we just

[08:14]

you go through a few names what about

[08:15]

the first your first tour against

[08:17]

Pakistan and then maybe Donald and mcgr

[08:20]

and and waren who reckons even today

[08:22]

after you smashed him around in charer

[08:25]

that he has nightmares of you hitting

[08:27]

for six I mean the first test series was

[08:31]

was uh An important series because uh I

[08:34]

was only 16 and I did not know at that

[08:38]

time what I was you know facing against

[08:42]

I mean uh you you talk about Iman Khan

[08:45]

world class bowler Wasim Akram amazing

[08:49]

absolutely super all time one of the

[08:52]

greatest Bowlers to have played vakar

[08:55]

yunus I would put him in the same

[08:57]

league Abdul Kad again in the same

[09:00]

league so it was a it was a world class

[09:04]

attack and uh I went out to bat in the

[09:07]

first

[09:08]

game and straight from school Cricket to

[09:12]

one season of first class cricket and

[09:14]

then to play against the best bowling

[09:16]

attack in the world I was clueless I had

[09:19]

no idea I was getting beaten by the pace

[09:23]

I'd never experience someone bowl at 90

[09:25]

95 M an hour and um I could I could

[09:29]

actually see the ball but uh while I was

[09:32]

reacting the ball was more towards the

[09:34]

keeper and not closer to the keeper

[09:36]

rather than it's it's it should be

[09:38]

closer to me but uh and I said oh this

[09:42]

is this is a wrong place and you know

[09:45]

you got in the wrong place at the wrong

[09:47]

time and I got out I got out on 15 while

[09:51]

walking back I somehow controlled my

[09:53]

tears I was only 16 then so I was

[09:56]

allowed to do all that I went to the

[09:59]

bathroom and I cried and I looked at

[10:01]

myself in the mirror said this this

[10:03]

level of cricket is not for you you know

[10:06]

you're not good enough to do all this

[10:09]

and uh fortunately I got about six days

[10:12]

in between so I ended up speaking to lot

[10:15]

of uh the senior players and the team

[10:17]

the coach and they all said that you

[10:20]

know you batted as if you were playing a

[10:22]

school batch this is not a school match

[10:24]

you need to learn to give respect to

[10:26]

these worldclass Bowlers and you need to

[10:30]

you need to just hang around there give

[10:32]

yourself some time and in the next match

[10:36]

I went out I was just hoping that I get

[10:38]

picked for the next game which I was and

[10:41]

the next game I decided not to look at

[10:44]

the scoreboard I said the only time I'm

[10:47]

looking in the direction of the score

[10:49]

scoreboard is to look at the clock

[10:51]

because I had decided my target was that

[10:53]

I'm going to bat for half an hour not

[10:56]

worrying about

[10:57]

runs and after half an hour you know I

[11:00]

got used to that pace and I said I can

[11:02]

deal with this pace you know it's it's

[11:05]

it's not easy but it's not impossible

[11:08]

and that changed my thinking I scored 59

[11:11]

in that test match and from there on I

[11:15]

never doubted my ability but the first

[11:17]

match I thought it was my first and the

[11:19]

last one what about fear in that you've

[11:22]

been able to overcome a lot of pine

[11:24]

during your career in the in the in fact

[11:27]

uh in the same series uh in the fourth

[11:29]

test match we were in a in a bad

[11:32]

position in the second Innings we were

[11:34]

34 for four wickets down and with a day

[11:37]

and a half to go so I got hit on my nose

[11:41]

when I was batting on one I later on I

[11:44]

realized that I had broken my nose uh

[11:48]

everyone gathered and then you know you

[11:50]

know what happens when Pakistan team is

[11:52]

around you there there are bound to be

[11:54]

some commends and and Javed miandad was

[11:58]

was uh you know a tricky customer and

[12:00]

then he said you've broken your nose you

[12:03]

you can't be batting here you have to go

[12:05]

to the hospital knowing that you know

[12:07]

one batsman goes to the hospital there

[12:09]

again they start to dominate yeah and

[12:12]

the doctor came I iced my nose and I put

[12:15]

a bandage and I continued

[12:17]

batting but U that was again I mean I I

[12:20]

scored 58 in that match and I batted for

[12:24]

four more hours after that which sort of

[12:27]

you know helped us draw the series

[12:29]

because Pakistan had the most wonderful

[12:32]

attack in the world they were expected

[12:34]

to thrash us

[12:36]

40 and to to draw the series was kind of

[12:40]

a uh which I which I got to know through

[12:43]

English guys it was a moral victory for

[12:46]

us so so I only learned that word

[12:49]

towards the end of my career but it

[12:52]

means a lot so it was kind of a moral

[12:55]

victory for us and we were able to draw

[12:58]

but uh

[12:59]

I I became Fearless after that look I

[13:03]

think an interesting question here would

[13:06]

be you've had your highs and your lows

[13:09]

and you've been absolutely um

[13:11]

magnificent right through how does one

[13:14]

get up off the deck when when things

[13:17]

aren't going well I would like to share

[13:20]

one experience with you here it's it's a

[13:22]

funny story but uh completely out of the

[13:25]

box which we hadn't tried and it it did

[13:29]

wonders for our team we were playing

[13:32]

against New

[13:33]

Zealand and uh Chris kanes was bowling

[13:37]

this was in India uh in uh in moali so

[13:41]

in your

[13:42]

hometown uh it was it was uh uh the ball

[13:47]

was reverse swinging and Chris GES was

[13:50]

virtually beating

[13:52]

us two three times an over I was batting

[13:54]

with Rahul davit so the main batters of

[13:57]

batting we'd like to believe that we

[13:58]

were the main

[13:59]

batters and uh we were getting beaten

[14:02]

and we were sort of Clueless because we

[14:04]

couldn't see the

[14:05]

shine sometimes the surfaces are such

[14:09]

that it becomes little difficult to

[14:11]

figure out which side which side is the

[14:13]

shiny side and which is the rough side I

[14:16]

mean uh I I expect all you guys to know

[14:19]

what reverse swing is reverse swing is

[14:22]

wherever the shiny side is the ball

[14:24]

starts to go in that direction even if

[14:26]

the bowler wants the ball to go in the

[14:28]

opposite direction it will not go

[14:30]

because of the imbalance and uh the the

[14:33]

surface of of the ball so Chris had

[14:37]

started doing that and I met with Rahul

[14:41]

in the middle of the Wicket in the

[14:42]

middle of the over I said I've got an

[14:43]

idea uh and he said uh do you want to

[14:45]

share it now or after the

[14:48]

over I said I'll share with you after

[14:50]

the over but but it it can work so rul

[14:55]

said okay tell me now what is what is

[14:57]

your idea I said to Rahul I am closer to

[15:01]

the bowler and when he walking back on

[15:04]

the run up I need to stand here and he's

[15:07]

walking back onto his run up I would be

[15:09]

watching him closely and I'd be watching

[15:11]

the ball which side is a shiny side and

[15:14]

which side is a rough side so rul said

[15:17]

uh then what happens after that I said

[15:19]

whichever side is the shiny side I will

[15:22]

hold the bat in that hand if the ball if

[15:26]

he's going to Bow an outswinger the bat

[15:28]

is going to be in my left hand if he's

[15:30]

bowling ins swinger the bat is in my

[15:32]

right hand at the non-striker's end so

[15:34]

that's the only time in my career when

[15:37]

the batsman is ready to face the ball

[15:39]

he's not watching the bowler he's

[15:40]

watching the

[15:42]

bat so he's very good so Rahul is

[15:45]

watching me and suddenly and

[15:49]

suddenly uh you see couple of cover

[15:52]

drives been hit for boundaries and you

[15:54]

know on drives passing you know piercing

[15:57]

midwicket and mid on and Chris is like

[15:59]

wondering I mean these guys are getting

[16:01]

beaten couple of times every hour and

[16:03]

suddenly I'm giving away couple of

[16:05]

boundaries there's definitely something

[16:07]

wrong so all the fielders were watching

[16:10]

me because I was you know watching Chris

[16:13]

and not Rahul normally no batsman stands

[16:16]

facing the Bowery he would be like

[16:18]

facing the other batter and then I would

[16:21]

quickly change the bat and they by then

[16:22]

they had sort of figured out that there

[16:24]

is something fishy and Chris lost his

[16:27]

momentum he lost his rhythm and he held

[16:29]

the ball cross him and he bowled the

[16:32]

ball and instead of you know looking at

[16:35]

Rahul or checking what has happened

[16:37]

there he looks at me and I say what have

[16:39]

you got for

[16:41]

this Chris Chris didn't realize that I

[16:45]

had also warned Rahul that if I don't

[16:48]

know what is coming I'm going to hold

[16:50]

the bat in the

[16:51]

middle so that is uh that is how the

[16:55]

story goes so it's

[16:56]

just in short it's just being a step

[17:00]

ahead of your opposition sat thank you

[17:03]

so much ladies and gentlemen it has been

[17:05]

an outstanding night thank you so much
