Understanding Materials and Materials Development in Language Teaching
Overview
In this lesson, Miss Mars introduces the concepts of materials and materials development in the context of language teaching. She emphasizes the importance of selecting and creating effective learning materials to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
Key Competencies
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define materials and materials development.
- Cite examples of learning materials suitable for classroom use.
- Discuss the role of materials in language classrooms.
What Are Materials?
- Analogy: Materials in language teaching can be likened to tools for carpenters, essential for building knowledge.
- Definition: According to Tomlinson (2001), materials are anything that facilitates language learning. This includes resources used by teachers to assist students.
- Variety: Materials can be auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or printed, and should cater to diverse learning styles.
Importance of Materials
- Central Role: Authors like Garten and Gravis (2014) highlight that materials are central to effective language teaching. For more on effective teaching strategies, see our summary on Motivational Strategies for Engaging Students in Real and Virtual Classrooms.
- Engagement: Effective materials enhance lesson engagement and learning effectiveness.
- Adaptation and Creation: Teachers must be creative and resourceful in selecting or creating materials that meet their students' needs. For insights on adult learning, check out Understanding Motivation in Adult Learning: Strategies for Success.
Materials Development
- Field of Study: Involves understanding principles, procedures, design, and evaluation of language teaching materials. For a broader perspective on teaching methodologies, refer to our Comprehensive Overview of Mathematics Teaching Methodology and Course Structure.
- Undertaking: Includes the production, implementation, and evaluation of materials.
- Principles and Procedures: Teachers must base their material development on established principles of second language acquisition and follow specific procedures.
Conclusion
Miss Mars concludes by reiterating the importance of adapting and creating materials for effective language teaching. She encourages teachers to be thoughtful and intentional in their material choices to support their students' learning journeys.
good day everyone uh this is your teacher miss mars and on today's video i will teach you
uh the first topic of our unit one and of course that is lesson one and it is defining materials and materials
development so i hope you all are ready and without further ado let's begin all right so by the end of this lesson
class you should possess the following competencies first is you would be able to define
what material and material development second is you will of course be able to um cite examples of learning materials
that can be used in the classroom third is you would be able to discuss what materials and materials development
are in the context of language classes or language classroom so i hope you all are excited as i am excited as well so
let's begin okay class so to start this lesson we are going to answer first the first
question which is what are materials so if i am going to present an analogy to
you let's say you guys are working as carpenters we could somehow say that the materials
that we are talking about here are the tools that you can utilize in order for you to
build a house or in order for you to build a structure but in the context of language teaching
we could always go back to the core that we are focusing in this topic
and that is of course teaching english language to our learners so in our context tomlinson
2001 said that materials can anything that can be used to to facilitate the learning of a language
and since if we are going to consider
that definition of tomlinson in 2001 we could say that it is everything the
teacher or english language teachers are using in order to assist the learning of
of their students and we could think of really numerous materials that not only being utilized in offline teaching but
also in online teaching on the other hand another authors actually give their
definition of materials to be specific garten and gravis in 2014 say that materials
play a central role in language teaching and of course as language teachers we are expected to be utilizing varied
materials in order to cater our students remember class our students are definitely unique they are not the same
in terms of intelligence and in terms of learning style some prefer to learn using audio others
prefer to use both audio and visual others also could effectively learn a language if they are using visual and a
lot more so these things should be considered that is why materials play central role in language
teaching imagine if you are studying without any material
okay so that would that be possible yes that could be but it would really be different in terms of effectiveness and
at the same time the fun you know and how engaging your lesson is of course it's because you use a really
good material that you know as a teacher really caters the need of your students
so being a teacher language teacher to be specific it's not like a piece of cake we really have to make sure that we
are creative and resourceful enough to think of what what materials do students really need
so we have to decide on that and you being the teacher of those learners
you are the best person who can decide on what material you need or you can utilize for that
specific lesson in addition more and more authors give their definition of materials
we have diamanti fosi and inayati in 2018 they emphasize that materials are the
heart of the teacher and learning process and the materials that are chosen selectively and remember used
effectively will improve the tl process i would like to repeat the materials that are chosen
selectively and used effectively will improve the tl process tl teaching and learning so
that is why materials are very important and we don't just decide randomly on the materials that we are going to use as
teachers we have to be selective and and of course we have to use the materials that we chose effectively we
don't just take materials for granted let's say we receive a lot of materials from the school or from
our friend or from a colleague so we have to make sure we utilize them and we have to make sure that these
materials serve their purpose and as teachers we could also create our materials
it would be tid was but that is also one of our duties and responsibilities as teachers
so always remember the yamanti fosee and inayati in 2018
they give a very good definition also of materials and that is materials are the heart of teaching and learning process
on the other hand tomlinson in 2001 elaborates that materials can be in the form of
linguistic it can be in the form of auditory it can be visual it can be kinesthetic
and at the same time they can be presented through print and it could be presented through live
performance or display it could be through or or on the cassette cd-rom dvd rom or in the
internet as what tomlinson elaborated of course various materials there are
various materials that we can utilize and they come in different forms
so it is up to us as teachers on what type of materials are we going to use there is no such rule that oh you only
have to use kinesthetic related type of material or there is no such rule that we could definitely just
use um the ones that can be accessed or played
through a cassette especially now that our landscape in the teaching and learning has changed because of the
covet 19 pandemic so as teachers we can really decide and we really have to decide
um intelligently or we really have to decide well
on the type of material that we can utilize in order to support the distant learning that we are
actually um following now so we have this distant learning modality or the
the distant delivery of instruction and that is really a huge um
huge challenge to teachers like us all right a lot has been said and in fact a lot of authors have already given
their own definitions of what materials are and the bottom line here is that we
teachers need to adapt develop our own materials why do we need to adopt well we all know that
we have sources such as online you know we have a lot of online resources so that means
those materials that already exist which we think we could be able to perfectly utilize in our lesson then we could
adopt them all right and how about those materials that we have to create ourselves that
that's why we need to create the materials remember according to tomlinson in 2001 materials
can be anything that we use to facilitate the learning of our students and by facilitating this not only mean
class that we are talking here the materials or we are talking the materials here about uh the things that
we are going to use when we implement the lesson or when we discuss to our learners but how about the preliminaries
before the implementation of our of our lesson so that means even our lesson plan our syllabus those
are another types of material so those are part of the materials that i am talking about so that means we have to
create our own syllabus we have to create our own um lesson plan and a lot more that we create so of course the
bottom line teachers like us we have to adapt create our own materials this time we have our second
million dollar question and that question is what is materials development
so materials development is actually both a field of study and undertaking so i am going to discuss to you
why do we say it is a field of study and why do we say it is an undertaking so as a field of study it actually
studies the principles the procedures of implementation the design the evaluation of the language teaching
materials when we create language teaching materials we have to make sure we based it on principles okay we have
to make sure we study the principle we study the procedure the principles of the design so how should we be able to
create a design so we have to to anchor on the principles and the procedures as well and the
implementation and the evaluation also of the language material so we don't just design class we also implement what
we have designed and we evaluate and these things we have to make sure we base it on existing principles and we
follow also specific procedures i know you don't like following procedures because it could really be a
lot of things to do i mean how we wish we live in a country or we
live in a world where everything we want we can just do it like everything could just be freely done by us but you know
we have rules not only in our daily life but even in teaching of course so we follow principles for
example the second language acquisition principles um a lot of
principles created by researchers by authors and of course by teachers themselves so
procedures as well remember principles of design and procedures of implementation and evaluation of the
teaching materials that is why it is a field of study because when we develop materials materials development we have
to study first before we come up with something we don't just randomly okay today i'm going to develop this and that
we have to consider things we have to read theories we have to pack ourselves with principles and procedures
okay how about as an undertaking so as an undertaking actually materials development involves three things the
production the implement the evaluation and the implementation so the the production of course after we design
the creation there would be the production now and that is an undertaking and the evaluation
we all know that after creating creating process or the designing the procedures that we are going to follow
the study or the field of study we don't just do evaluation in the field of study but we also evaluate
um in the undertaking or the undertaking side of material development or materials development
so we evaluate um and of course we implement you know we we amp we implement
we evaluate what we have implemented and we adapt now the materials that are created for teachers
for example those that we're up in the bookstores or online that we can we can access or we can adapt and we can
utilize for our classroom or for our language classes so i hope you were able to see
the difference between materials development as a field of study and as a field of undertaking
as a field of study remember we have to pack ourselves here with the principles and the procedures in order to
successfully create or in order to successfully animate the things that we have to do
under the field of study while in the field of undertaking of course it is here that we now come up
with a material and we also evaluate since we are now going to utilize that in our classroom and of course we adapt
so thank you very much all for uh listening and viewing this video i hope you
learned something for our lesson one of under unit one of our
um of our course so lesson one it is defining materials and materials
development bye everyone thank you and god bless keep safe
Heads up!
