Introduction to Airbnb Cleaning Efficiency
Managing turnovers between guests can be challenging, but adopting a strategic cleaning schedule and checklist can streamline the process, save time, and ensure guest satisfaction.
Getting Started: Laundry and Dishes
- Start Immediately: Strip beds and begin laundry right after guest check-out.
- Equipment Tip: Use a washing machine with a speed cycle to reduce laundry time.
- Kitchen Prep: Load and run the dishwasher promptly; familiarize yourself with cycle durations.
- Timing Strategy: Align cleaning tasks with laundry/dishwasher cycles to optimize efficiency.
Cleaning Methodology: Top-to-Bottom, Left-to-Right
- Systematic Approach: Clean from the highest surfaces downwards, moving from left to right to avoid missing spots.
- Visual Scanning: Assess each room’s surfaces before cleaning to identify dust and dirt hotspots.
- Focus Areas: Dust brick walls, coffee tables (including inside compartments), side tables, and upholstered furniture (vacuum couches for pet/hair debris).
Surface Cleaning Priorities
- Guest Contact Surfaces: Sanitize all items and surfaces guests touch, such as remote controls and kitchenware.
- Kitchen Specifics: Wipe under items, chairs, dining tables, and ensure silverware and glassware are spotless.
- Periodic Deep Cleaning: Schedule deep cleans for areas like refrigerator interiors, microwave, oven, and top cabinets every few weeks. For detailed cleaning techniques, see How to Clean Your Engine Bay: A Comprehensive Guide.
Bathroom Focus
- Thorough Cleaning: Pay special attention to showers, toilets (including behind), floors, mirrors, and cabinet interiors.
- Maintenance Tools: Keep a drain cleaner and plunger handy to address common issues swiftly.
- Material Consideration: Black grout helps maintain a clean appearance more easily than white grout.
Bedroom and Flooring Details
- Inspect & Dust: Check fans, chandeliers, vents, mirrors, and furniture surfaces regularly.
- Bedding Rotation: Use backup linens to allow for proper washing and drying cycles.
- Under-Bed Cleaning: Sweep/vacuum under beds to keep hidden areas spotless.
- Floor Care: Avoid buildup of cleaning product residues to prevent “black foot syndrome” and vacuum baseboards with an attachment to reduce dust.
Exterior Maintenance
- First Impressions Count: Ensure the entrance path is free from debris, mail, and cobwebs.
- Regular Upkeep: Clean exterior lighting and check for outdoor clutter to maintain guest appeal before they even enter.
Using Checklists for Consistency
- Accountability: Employ cleaning checklists such as Breezeway to track tasks, include photos for standards, and scale management across multiple properties. Utilizing a structured approach is akin to How to Organize Your Life: A Step-by-Step Guide, which can help hosts build effective routines.
- Routine: Develop habitual use of checklists to maintain high quality regardless of property count.
Final Inspection
- Step Back: After cleaning, take a brief break to reset your perspective.
- Detailed Walkthrough: Conduct a thorough inspection to fluff pillows, align remotes, tuck chairs, and ensure every detail meets your standards.

in today's video we're gonna help you nail down your Airbnb cleaning schedule and help you develop a checklist how
long does it take what do you need to do where do I start we're going to answer all those questions for you
[Music] once you open that door it is go time to get this place clean so the first two
things that you want to do immediately is you want to start getting the laundry going and getting the dishes going so
let's first start with laundry you want to strip those beds obviously check it for all the you know things and then get
it in that washer you want to get it going ASAP here's a hosting hot tip for you if you have the opportunity to
purchase that washer make sure you purchase one with a speed cycle next you want to head to the kitchen and get that
dishwasher loaded up again understand your dishwasher all of the Cycles how long each of them are you really want to
get acquainted with that but those are the first two things you want to get after and get that cleaning started ASAP
so that's a great way to figure out how long a turnover a clean should take you if your washing machine and drying Cycle
takes about an hour and a half half let's see if you can get your cleaning time to that time if you have a dryer
elsewhere washer and dryer elsewhere in your property if you don't have to do laundry onsite that's a whole different
situation and then next I've got two tips for you professional Cleaners clean top to bottom left to right it's is a
really good way so you don't miss any Services miss any walls if you have that system down top bottom left right you
are sure to see every surface nook and cranny of your property here's the really cool thing with shortterm rals
you are in there often so what I want to Annette and I believe wholeheartedly in super clean Super sanitized spaces but
you don't want to deep clean each and every time time is of the essence I'm sure you want to grow maybe do some
other things with your time you don't want to be turning over property for hours on end right so one thing that is
a non-negotiable for every single turnover is surfaces if a guest is touching a surface or touching a remote
control those are things you want to clean every single time I told you the tip of up down left right the way we do
that in our properties if you have multi-level properties everything you do on the top start there and then you go
to the middle then you go to the main floor that's top to bottom and then left to right you're going to use your your
your eye to look at the room first you a visual scan and then you're going to go for okay what needs dusted what surfaces
need cleaned and then you'll work on the floor so right now if I'm in this living room space it's open concept but I like
to treat it in different sections there's only one floor on this property it's all one floor so there's my top
bottom this is the left side of the room I'm going to use my eyes to scan from the top of this wall on my left to the
bottom and I'm going to go around the room and decide what I'm going to do the surfaces I see obviously are this
especially because of this brick and get Dusty so I'm definitely going to clean this I'm going to make sure that I clean
my coffee table here this coffee table can lift up so I'll make sure the guest didn't do anything inside the coffee
table I'll also dust in there we've got a table or a side table over there and we also by by surfaces especially with
the couches I'm probably going to run the vacuum over the couch to make sure that any we're pet friendly so any pet
hair human hair we get that off the couch as well so breaking it down like that visually and then starting with
surfaces and then working your way to the floors is a great way just to keep yourself on task all right and that's
going to take over all right top down left right let's do it in here so first obviously we do
have a mirror re just hot tip here mirrors are great double as artwork and place your guests can check themselves
out we're going to wipe that down if you have faux plants fake plants which we do you do want to look at this dust these
down these get super Dusty just because you bought plants you don't think you have to water them you do have to dust
them and that's why we go top bottom because the top if we're shaking these there's going to be a lot of dust going
down to our floor then we're going to want to do our c surface here again I'm going left to right do not forget in
your short-term rental you have got to move everything you've got to wipe underneath those surfaces and I'm in the
dining room right now listen you have got to wipe down your chairs you want to act like your guests were um you at a
restaurant with little kids you want to make sure that you're wiping down all of the chairs and underneath the floor all
right well not underneath the floor I don't know if you can actually do that but you want to go underneath the table
table to the floor okay the kitchen this is one of the this in the bedroom you want to make
sure these are on point you want to make sure your whole place is on point but now I told you beginning this video that
I don't want you deep cleaning every single time but here's a lesson I learned the hard way when you have
guests who you don't know who have different ideas of what clean is and they're in your space for a couple days
maybe they've run the dishwasher maybe they've washed the dishes by hand you don't know so I will give you this tip
you want to when you're coming into clean you want to check the silverware and the bowls and the glass wear and not
just the top Bowl I would do a quick visual scan again top bottom left right just to make sure all the silverware is
as clean as you would want it that as clean as would you would get in a restaurant right you just want to make
sure that stuff is topnotch other than that same uh things apply top bottom left right surfaces all surfaces that a
guest can touch get cleaned things like top of the refrigerator the top cabinets that aren't used um anything that that
is more of a deep clean schedule those out to like every two three four weeks you don't need to do that every single
time I would clean out the um microwave even if it looks clean just do a quick wipe same with the oven if you can keep
on these guys they won't get bad over time same with the refrigerator again a light clean if they got heavy use
obviously you'll need to adjust your clean levels for that and then um would also do a visual scan of your pots and
pants make sure they are actually clean things that you want to wait for like filters um don't need to be a very time
maybe like just use your hands to check the knobs and the handles here there's nothing more disgusting than your guest
checking in and this is like greasy and it's got crumbs so you do want to do this every single time and again I
consider this a surface that a guest touches once the surfaces are clean dishes are clean we talked at the
beginning the video make sure this gets started right away do the floors and the kitchen is
done all right this space to know it is to love it and hate it listen again you're going to do the top the bottom
left to right in here you need to spend a lot of time in the the bathroom area it's going to get a lot of use let's
face it um so the shower you really want to make sure you're cleaning this I know a lot of people that maybe just like
spray the floor you know you want to make sure that you're cleaning this there's a lot of tools out there that
can help you uh clean clean the glass clean the tile hot tip it is great if you have black grout it really helps you
keep the place looking a lot cleaner when you get white grout it's just very very difficult to continue to keep top
top notch clean same with the floor here you can tell it's white but we also have some uh black grout there again wanting
to toilet let's talk about this you want to a place that a lot of people miss you want to get back behind the toilet and
every single time okay this has got to be Super Fresh super clean always check under the cabinet and the drawers
in the bathroom these can get really dirty with you know people uh doing their hair in here makeup you want to
check these and wipe these down every single time your guest will look under your cabinets and they will open your
drawers and then the surfaces you're going to want to W wipe these down excellently one thing I want to let you
know if I don't know a host that hasn't been called because their drains have backed up so you want to keep something
like um a drain weasel or just like a simple drain cleaner that you can have this this you will get a call on this
and the second thing we're going to talk about probably want to leave a plunger for your guests you definitely do let
them help themselves but this is something you want to make sure that is super clean you know I don't need to
explain that I don't think all right in this property we're in our final room it is the bedroom top
bottom left right visual scan and here's why I say visual scan CU I'm going to look up at either the chandelier or the
fan there is nothing more gross than when you're checking in you're snuggling down for your first night's sleep and
you see either a vent in the ceiling or the chandelier or fan is dripping with spiderwebs and dust you don't have to
dust it every time but you do want to look every time and make sure you've got a schedule going of things like that
where like dust and dirt can accumulate so top bottom left right we're going to do surfaces so surfaces in here would
include the full length mirror the side tables the top of the um the bed frame uh there's really not a lot of other
surfaces in here the back door you might want to just like wipe off the handles things like that and then of course
right now our bedding is getting washed and dried once that is done you can either put that bedding back on your bed
maybe you want to like rotate more often so you're going to use your your backup stock to make the bed while that is dry
you can fold it and put it in the back stock whatever your preference is there and um then you want to finally check
under the bed I always like to run a Swiffer under the bed both dry and wet I like to keep on top of that because that
separates you from all of your competition if under your bed is sparkling clean one time I went to a
hotel and it even had a little card that said yep we clean under here too and then signed the name of the hotel and I
thought that was such a cute idea cuz I totally looked to see what's under the bed how clean is it it so think about
what you do when you're inspecting a property and you make sure that your property is just as up to Snuff as you'd
want it to be we want to touch on the floors really really quick CU we're going top to bottom here's the thing
you're obviously going to want a vacuum make sure you're cleaning your vacuum out so it is clean the second thing
there's something called black foot syndrome I know you've seen it before it's where you w wear white socks around
someone's house you lift your foot up and you're like oh my gosh this place is filthy but you look around you're like
it looks super clean the cleaning products can build up so you want to make sure that you are using just hot
water sometimes to get all of that cleaning solution up because that is not a good feeling if your guest is walking
around in a fresh pair of socks and they see that they've turned Black by the end so you really want to watch out for that
happening if you're using too many Cleaning Solutions on your floor to keep your deep clean sessions to a minimum I
also recommend every turnover I'm a baseboard lady like if your baseboards are clean I know that you are like on
top of your stuff so I would take the the attachment yep of the vacuum put it on the hose and just really quickly go
over the top of the baseboards and along the insides because that way you don't have to do like a major dust or you
don't have to scrub them so often um so dusting and or and or you know just taking the wand across your baseboard is
another great way is to keep your floors clean oh and then check in so you want to make sure your exterior is also tidy
yeah that that's that's the first experience that your guest is going to have we always think it's after they
open the door it's not it's when they're walking up to your property so check around like is there any mail maybe junk
mail newspaper just any debris like door lighting covered in cobwebs right we know it's outside if you can keep on top
of that stuff again your deep clean isn't so deep so the checkin begins when they Park their car so check Che all
those areas out if you keep up on them it'll be just super easy for you to keep them clean final hot tip of this video
is we've been in the short-term rental game for a long time and you better believe I still use a checklist for
every time either I clean or I inspect or I inspect inspection like right like I'm always just holding myself
accountable so if you want a checklist we love and use Breezeway here's why we like them you not only have the
reminders they and you can organize however you want you can also put photos so this is how you want it to look after
it's cleaned to those references and if you get one property two property three property who knows someday you're a
super co-host you're managing tons of properties you can start building out these like brand standards but start
with your very first one get in the habit and always hold yourself accountable by a checklist last but not
least once you think you're done take a two minute three minute break Brak
decompress you want to walk back through your entire property and inspect when you're in the thick of it when you're
like really getting after it making sure the clean is done there's some detail work that you just OB you just have
cleaning lenses on so you need to take take a deep breath decompress then put your inspector glasses on you want to go
back through one more time into every room this is where you're going to like make sure the remote control is exactly
lined up fluff the pillows and just look at all that detail work maybe the chairs need to be tucked in the table
underneath the table a little closer you just want to go room by room and do that secondary check that's a higher level
inspection [Music]
Begin laundry and dishwasher cycles immediately after guest check-out to maximize multitasking. Organize cleaning tasks around these cycles and follow a systematic top-to-bottom, left-to-right approach to avoid missing spots and save time.
Focus on guest contact surfaces like remote controls, kitchenware, dining tables, chairs, and silverware. Wipe thoroughly under items and ensure glassware is spotless. Schedule periodic deep cleans for appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves, and ovens every few weeks.
Thoroughly clean showers, toilets (including behind), floors, mirrors, and cabinet interiors. Keep tools like a drain cleaner and plunger accessible for quick issue resolution. Using black grout can help maintain a clean look more easily than white grout.
Dust fans, chandeliers, vents, mirrors, and furniture surfaces regularly. Rotate bedding using backup linens to allow washing and drying cycles. Sweep or vacuum under beds and clean baseboards with attachments to reduce dust and prevent residue buildup on floors.
The Airbnb entrance creates guests’ first impression, so keeping paths free of debris, mail, and cobwebs is essential. Regularly clean exterior lighting and remove outdoor clutter to enhance curb appeal and guest satisfaction before they enter the property.
Using checklists like Breezeway helps hosts track and verify each cleaning task, include photos for standards, and manage multiple properties efficiently. Developing a routine checklist habit ensures consistent quality and accountability across turnovers.
After cleaning, take a short break to reset your perspective, then perform a detailed walkthrough. Fluff pillows, align remotes, tuck in chairs, and carefully inspect each room to ensure all details meet high standards before guest arrival.
