Overview of Group Problem Solving Evaluation
In this instructional video, participants learn how to effectively evaluate a group problem-solving (GPS) event. The session emphasizes two main actions: conducting a GPS event and writing a reflective paper on another group's performance.
Key Steps in Evaluation
- Watch the GPS Event: Participants are provided with a URL to view a previous group's GPS event.
- Take Detailed Notes: It is crucial to take comprehensive notes during the event, focusing on the rubric provided for assessment. For effective note-taking strategies, consider reviewing our summary on Effective Note-Taking Strategies for Marketing Case Studies.
- Use the Rubric: The rubric includes various criteria such as:
- Following the steps of the GPS process
- Managing tasks and bonds
- Overall group performance
- Defend Your Ratings: Each mark on the rubric must be justifiable. Avoid marking anything you cannot explain.
Writing the Evaluation Paper
- Structure: The paper should be well-organized, written in paragraphs, and cover all aspects of the rubric. For insights on academic writing, check out our guide on Mastering Evaluation for IB English Paper One.
- Definitions: Include definitions of key concepts and terms used in the evaluation.
- Balanced Feedback: Provide a fair assessment by balancing positive and negative observations. Avoid extremes in evaluation. This approach aligns with the principles discussed in 5 Evidence-Based Strategies to Achieve Your Goals.
- Detail and Examples: Use specific examples to illustrate points rather than vague statements.
- Length: Aim for a minimum of three double-spaced pages, ensuring thorough coverage of the topic.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Overemphasizing either positive or negative aspects of the group's performance.
- Providing vague feedback without specific examples.
- Failing to meet the required length due to insufficient detail.
Conclusion
Participants are encouraged to ask questions if they need clarification on any aspect of the evaluation process. in putting into action the strategies and tactics of group problem solving as we're talking about them using
communication to solve a problem we're doing two actions in this class one we're actually having you do a gps event
and the second we're actually going to have you write a paper in which you evaluate
another group's gps event and that is what's going on here and i want to talk about how to write this
what you're going to be given here is a url for another group from last summer doing their gps event so i'm going to
have you watch that and i'm going to give you instructions here
about taking notes in writing the paper so
this should give you enough if you don't understand something about this please let me know
first obvious thing you've already done would be to take good notes on the group gps event and you first of all have your
rating sheet itself with the rubric and try to mark as many of these as you can especially mop
map i mean did they follow the steps or not if they didn't if they missed steps
then put fair or poor mark that and then it's many of the manage
message messages that you can do either task or bond and keep in mind you're doing
overall ratings of the group now
just an instruction as you're doing this remember that the basic paper is going to involve you
defending or explaining every mark you make on this rubric sheet
so don't mark something that you can't explain or defend so you have this rubric sheet and then
the blank areas where you take general notes about things that you noticed about their maximum moral participation
what happened with them mapping out and following the steps how they did a manager task a manager bond that kind of
thing and as i said i hope you took very very good notes because you're going to write your paper
based on this so you have your notes and then you need to work on writing the
paper itself so again the primary idea here is that you're supposed to explain the rating
mark to man in the rubric and make sure you include that rubric with the paper itself
as you're writing this paper up keep in mind the following first of all be thorough and clear
so cover everything and make sure you very clearly indicate how you
believe that they did well or not so well on this point
and then make sure you provide definitions of key concepts that's one place you can maybe add some space to
your paper if you cite a term then make sure you define that term so for instance if you use keep the phrase
keep on track explain what that means any of those message types you use the phrase
define terms and parameters explain what that means definitions of all key concepts are
really important to do and then when you start evaluating balance the positive and negative okay
say as many negatives as positives and try not to over emphasize either one the two most common mistakes on this paper
are one someone says that the group is the most wonderful thing they do everything right
or the opposite this group stunk they do everything wrong well the truth always falls in between
those two points so try to be as balanced as you possibly can and remember try to put details give
examples don't say vague they did wonderful they were really smart or something like that
precisely say what you mean give examples to try to illustrate what you mean as you can
and this is a paper okay this is a paper so write in paragraphs look at the example that i provided on brightspace
make sure you cover mop map and manage and all the sub components now how long is it going to
be well i hate to put page links for this
because i want to put you know the emphasis on do a good job if you do a good job i can't see how you
could get less than three pages type doublespaced you could easily get more
but if you're only doing a page page and a half then you know you have not done a good job on this paper and there will be
a grade accordingly try to write as much as you possibly can let me know if you have any questions
Heads up!
