Understanding Dual Structure Theory: A New Perspective on Motivation
Overview
In this video, the speaker introduces Frederick Herzberg's Dual Structure Theory, a motivational method that offers a unique perspective on employee motivation. Unlike traditional views that see satisfaction and dissatisfaction as opposite ends of the same spectrum, Herzberg's theory divides motivation into two distinct factors: hygiene factors and motivation factors.
Key Points
- Historical Context: Developed in the late 1950s, Herzberg's theory challenges previous motivational theories, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. For a deeper understanding of motivation, you may also explore Understanding Motivation in Adult Learning: Strategies for Success.
- Two Dimensions of Motivation:
- Hygiene Factors: These are elements that can cause dissatisfaction if not addressed (e.g., office temperature, workspace conditions). However, improving these factors does not necessarily lead to increased satisfaction.
- Motivation Factors: These factors contribute to higher satisfaction and motivation (e.g., challenging work, recognition).
- Practical Implications for Managers:
- Managers often focus too much on hygiene factors, believing that improving the work environment will automatically enhance motivation. This aligns with insights from Understanding and Overcoming Resistance to Change in the Workplace, which discusses how addressing employee concerns is crucial for effective management.
- It is crucial to address dissatisfaction first but then shift focus to motivation factors to truly engage employees. For strategies on engaging employees, consider reviewing Motivational Strategies for Engaging Students in Real and Virtual Classrooms.
Conclusion
Herzberg's Dual Structure Theory provides a valuable framework for understanding motivation in the workplace. By recognizing the distinction between hygiene and motivation factors, managers can develop more effective strategies to enhance employee satisfaction and productivity. This approach is essential for unlocking competitive advantage, as discussed in Unlocking Competitive Advantage: The Role of Human Resource Management.
hi today i would like to tell you about one of the motivational methods which is called dual structure theory which was
created by frederick herzberg dual structure two factors here you can find different names of the same
theory well the main question is why we're going to talk about that one beside of all other ones
that were discussed before like muscle for example the main idea is just to present you
that on the same topic which is called motivation you can look from super
different perspectives and here's who created his work and the end of 50s of the 20th century we
just found that the perspective how we look at motivation
might be very different to what maslov did if you take a look on that in traditional attempt of motivation
that satisfaction and dissatisfaction there were opposite ads of the same dimension
which saying it more practically means same thing might very satisfy you or very
dissatisfying sounds logical if you think generally about that i believe for most of the people it sounds
super logical but let's think about it in a more complex way
well according to what you can find in here on this illustration on the top red one
you can find this traditional attempt single dimension same thing gives you satisfaction dissatisfaction
but if you start thinking on practical examples if i work in the office and it's cold in the
office i'm very dissatisfied but does it mean that if in this office it will be warm
i will be super satisfied and that's how it should be it doesn't mean it gives me super big
satisfaction that hey it's plus 20 in the office oh it's just something normal
and that's exactly what hair is good for that the same aspect is a bit more complex so
we have two factors the factor which is called motivation factor
and the factor which is called hygiene factor if you take a look on this illustration once again
motivation factor means that something gives you high motivation so high satisfaction
or no satisfaction and a hygiene factor gives you dissatisfaction or no dissatisfaction
basing on the example that i just gave you if it's super cold in my office i'm dissatisfied if it's plus 20
i'm not dissatisfied but it doesn't mean i'm super happy about it with a similar aspect if i have very
challenging topic at work this is something that gives me satisfaction
if i have just ordinary job i'm not satisfied but it doesn't mean i'm dissatisfied
well you can start thinking cool someone created two factors y2 why not three what's
behind them well behind that is a perspective which tells you
how and on what we should concentrate being the managers and we concentrate on the aspect i would
like to motivate my people and many times the managers they have a tendency
to concentrate to put too much attention on the areas of hygiene and that's right first you should
concentrate on the areas of dissatisfaction just sold them and that's all but if our
employees are working in the office which is cold and which looks bad we should fix it but it doesn't mean
that we have to invest let's say 100 million and building very very sophisticated building
because your employees mostly will not get more motivated if you will transfer them
in new office but still being having the same repetitive procedures but for many
managers it's just easier to spend the money make the basic move and set
it down it's easy while spending money even if it's costly that's why so many companies are
investing money we're moving to more prestigious place the equipment in here looks like that that
and that that's expensive but it doesn't automatically mean
that it gives high satisfaction to your employees so too much attention too much importance is many times placed on
these environmental factors they should be done
feel like it's done no dissatisfaction and then to put the attention on the motivation factors
and concentrate on that so summing up dual structure theory by harrisburg you have two dimensions
hygiene motivation and that's just a different perspective how you can look on the topic of motivation thank you
